This review is from: Kids Knitting: Projects for Kids of all Ages (Hardcover)
This is the book my 8-year-old daughter and I used together to learn how to knit. As the subtitle says, it's a book for kids "of all ages".When you read through this book you will not only learn how to knit, but you will have a deeper appreciation of needlework in general. The author covers what basic supplies you need to get started, how to make your own knitting needles (yes! And it is a lot easier than you may think), how to decorate your needles, why you should start using two different color needles, what to do when you don't have any needles (you can still knit with your fingers, the book shows you how!), how to make "kool-aid" yarn in super-fun colors, and where yarn comes from. The instructions were much simpler to understand than those in the traditional "adult books" and after finishing a few of the basic projects, I actually felt inspired to learn more, as did my daughter. If you are looking for a terrific alternative to TV and video games then definitely buy this book. There are plenty of photographs of girls AND boys from all different races and creeds who seem to be enjoying their time spent knitting, and the pages are splashed with fun colors and typeface. 5 Stars. This is the very best beginners book on the market!

I've been knitting for 40+ years and I bought this book for my personal collection. It has very clear directions, colorful photos and illustrations, and is ideal for teaching children AND adults to knit. The projects are fun and interesting to make. I had only one small problem with one of the methods the author used but, overall, I think this a great book. Put this book in a package with some needles and yarn and you've got a great gift for any kid on your list. But be sure the recipient has someone to help him/her if they have questions. Oh yes, I like the fact that they show BOYS knitting!! Good for them!

I purchased this book for my 7 year old son because he wanted to learn to knit with "two needles". He is an accomplished finger knitter! The "two needle" technique proved too difficult for him at this time, but having always wanted to learn knitting myself, I decided to give it a whirl. Finally someone has written a book on how to knit that even I can follow. The projects in the book make great gifts, especially if you have appeciative kids or young friends. When I progressed to making a sample of various stitches I did need the hands on advise of an experienced knitter to guide me through the instructions but more to boost my confidence that I wasn't missing something. The instructions and illustrations throughout the book are very readable and a lot of fun. The book also concludes with a great, comprehensive glossary of common abbreviations used in commercial knitting instructions.

This is a great book for beginning knitters. I myself learned to knit 4 or 5 years ago from this book when I was seven or eight years old and since then I have gone a long way. I love the patterns. I disagree with the person that said that kids would need adult help with the patterns. I don't at all (by the way, the only knitters in my family are me and my sisters.) There are patterns for scarves, bean bags, stockinette stitch sweater, hat, tube socks, an afghan and more. It covers many kinds of stitches, which can be practiced in the bean bags and swatch scarf. This book also has clear, colorful illustrative darwings and includes stuff about knitting around the world and the process of making yarn. It additionally includes information on yarn companies. The only problem I had with this book is when I was learning to knit from the illustrations. Now that I look back on it, the illustrations are actually pretty clear. A younger kid might need some adult guidance.
Now I've moved on to bigger and better books, but I still enjoy reading "Kids Knitting" for fun and sometimes doing a random project. This is an excellent book for beginners, and I highly recommend it.

I bought this book to teach my daughter to knit,

... The instructions are clear and concise - very easy for any age to understand... The photos throughout the book are very colorful. Seeing the pictures of the kids knitting motivates... There are many projects, which are very cute. Most of the projects can be done in a short period of time, which is great for kids who can't wait. The projects in the book use the basic garter stitch then teaches how to combine knit and purl stitches into several stitch combinations. The book even teaches how to read a pattern. This was a great help to me since I knew how to knit and purl, but never combined them. I have shown this book to many friends, and everyone has loved it. The yarns look beautiful, and the projects are do-able. We are really excited to start knitting!

While it is certainly easier to learn to knit from a live person, this book is the next best thing. With clear pictures and directions, this book takes you from the tools through how to knit a whole sweater.Along the way, there are lots of projects designed to practice specific skills: knit, purl, weaving, increasing, ribbing, and so on. This means that, instead of practicing for a long time before you begin your sweater, you can make a bean bag, a hat, a scarf, a back pack, and much more while practicing. At the end, you will be ready to succeed with the simple sweater pattern. Since the pattern goes up to 46" at the chest, many adults will be able to make and enjoy this sweater, too. My personal favorite pattern in this book is the spiral sock. This pattern makes great slippers, while giving plenty of practice in decreasing. The swatch scarf lets you practice different stitch patterns and use the results in a whimsical scarf. There is even a felting project. All the patterns are given in plain English, but there is a page at the back which explains knitter-ese like "psso". Naturally, all the patterns are simple, but they are designed with beautiful yarns which will give nice results. A beginning knitter who makes several patterns from this book will be ready to go on to grownup patterns!

Kids Knitting: Projects for Kids of All Ages,

I bought Kids Knitting to help my daughter,11, learn to knit. I looked through it and loved the format and cute patterns. I have made a hat and socks from the book. I had a little trouble with the twisted rib on the socks, but once I made one sock, it was easy to do the other. We had fun making the knitting needles from dowels and putting homemade balls(Sculpey) on the ends. The wooden needles are really nice to knit on. The book is great for "kids of all ages," as the subtitle says.

Great Book, Easy To Follow,
By Patty Scheidel "Patty" (Wilmington, Delaware United States) - See all my reviews

I bought this book to teach myself how to knit. After a couple practice squares, I've spent the past couple months working on my first patchwork afghan. This book is very easy to follow. As someone in there mid 20s, I felt bad that I did not have someone in my life growing up that knew how to knit. Many children's books on the market are great because they are easy to read and they have colorful pictures. When I read so many good reviews about this book, I knew I should giving knitting a try! Although I felt silly buying a book for kids, I have to admit that this is one of the best instruction books I own. I highly recommend it for anyone learning how to knit on their own!

I fall into the category of kids of "all ages." I'm an adult who wanted to take up knitting as a hobby, with hopes of making a few holiday presents along the way, too. This book taught me the basics and gave me some great ideas for projects. I was able to take the ideas given here and go off on my own... as well as read more advanced knitting patterns. This is a great starter book for anyone who wants to learn to knit!

Not Just for Kids!!,

This review is from: Kids Knitting: Projects for Kids of all Ages (Hardcover)
After examaning umpteen books to learn to knit, I finally bought this one. The instructions are very basic and very clear. The illustrations are very easy to follow. It is a great book to learn knitting basics. I noticed there are a couple of reviewers who have poo-pooed this book, so I will add the following disclaimer...WHEN LEARNING ANYTHING NEW YOU WILL MOST LIKELY MAKE MISTAKES, AND WILL HAVE TO PRACTICE TO GET BETTER!! I spent about one weekend getting the hang of the the knit stitch and the purl stitch, and making the perfect "beanbag". But now I must say it is a bit like riding a bike...practically second nature.
