5.0 out of 5 stars Everything You Need to Start a School Newspaper, April 1, 2005
By
This review is from: Kids in Print: Publishing a School Newspaper, Second Edition (Spiral-bound)
I have purchased numerous books about journalistic styles of writing, but this particular handbook really got me started. As a middle school teacher, I had difficulty in finding books with proper journalistic language and with sound newspaper advice. This handbook certainly has the journalistic nuts and bolts covered quite nicely.

This handbook is also filled with applicable and reproducible materials that can be directly used in the student news room. From job applications to work in progress worksheets, this handbook takes the new or seasoned newspaper advisor through the process of creating a newspaper - step by step. There are also useful resources for students about the basics of journalism. For example, journalism jargon is included along with lessons on inverted pyramid formats of writing. As a second year, middle school newspaper advisor, I find this book to be an extraordinary addition to my journalism library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for School Paper in WV, May 26, 2006

This review is from: Kids in Print: Publishing a School Newspaper, Second Edition (Spiral-bound)
I ordered the handbook when our school decided to begin a school newspaper. I have not had to search for any other resource. This book has everything you might need. It begins with hands-on practical approaches to choosing a staff and things to consider before beginning the paper. It is followed by actual ideas that can be used to produce a true journalistic setting from which to publish the paper. There are many pages that can be reproduced. The book gives ideas for monthly columns as well as ideas for feature stories. It even has a page to reproduce "press badges" for the staff. Our sixth graders produce our school paper but this book would be good for any start-up or established paper.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for young kids interested in journalism, February 12, 2006
This review is from: Kids in Print: Publishing a School Newspaper, Second Edition (Spiral-bound)
This book is quite helpful for teachers and parents with children who are interested in journalism. It gives several worksheets that allow kids to follow a structure for learning: figuring out an article's angle, following its progress, and what information is needed in an interview.

Along the way, a lot of information is squished to give kids all the more knowledge. Information boxes such as "a few ways to say said," a proofreading checklist, and commonly misspelled words give kids more reasons to do their work with excellence.

The book also gives helpful information about how to organize a school-funded newspaper, how to layout and design it, and how to publish it. I would recommend this to anyone looking for information on running a middle-school or younger school newspaper
