Book Description

January 1, 2003 4 and upP and up
This simple first aid book helps kids think wisely in an emergency. Well illustrated and easy to understand, it describes accident situations that children are likely to find themselves in. The paramedic/teacher author team provides step-by-step directions for handling such common problems as cuts, bloody noses, stings, electric shock and burns.

One of our most popular children’s books, "Kids to the Rescue!" opens with a note for parents, explaining how children can practice the first aid techniques. It concludes with a first aid quiz and instructions on calling 9-1-1 and other emergency numbers. The back cover has an index so kids can easily find the page of instructions they need.

Expanded and revised to cover HIV-safety.

Selected by SRA/McGraw-Hill for its fourth grade reading curriculum and praised in "School Library Journal," "The Horn Book," homeschooling and parenting publications.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6-- Designed as an instructional tool rather than a text to be studied independently, this collection of scenarios for role playing is intended to help children react when accidents happen. The book begins with common occurrences, such as nosebleeds and eye irritations, and advances through 14 medical emergencies, the most severe being electric shock, unconsciousness, and clothing on fire. In each instance, a common activity results in an accident and is followed by a list of the appropriate actions. These recommendations are sensible, often nonintrusive, and always include getting help in some form. A full-page, black-line drawing depicts each mishap. A large illustration shows what to do in each situation and reinforces the text's primary point, while small pictures accompany each item on the ``how to help'' list. They are minimally detailed but adequate. Situations are interesting and described in a conversational tone. A section on ``Using the phone to get help'' and a review quiz are also included. Similar in content and style to Harriet Gore's What to Do When There's No One but You (Prentice-Hall, 1974; o.p.), Kids to the Rescue provides a much-needed update to that title. --Denise L. Moll, Lone Pine Elementary School, West Bloomfield, MI

"This is the best 'first' first aid book that I have ever seen." -- Martin Millerchip, North Shore News, July 1992 --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

More About the Author

Maribeth Boelts lives in Iowa with her family and has been writing for children for almost 20 years. Her most recent titles, "Those Shoes" and "Before You Were Mine" have won a number of awards. Her picture book, "Happy Like Soccer" will be published May, 2012. A former teacher, Maribeth enjoys meeting and encouraging kids to read and write. "It is, in equal parts, an enthralling and confusing quest trying to crack the code on what makes a child pull a book off the shelf and continue turning the page. Figuring out what makes that same child laugh, feel understood or inspired is what keeps this career so interesting. I am grateful for every reader."

2.0 out of 5 stars Very superficial - better selections available., January 6, 2004
By

This book would be better than having no first aid book or reference at all - but, not much better. Topics covered include: nose bleed, something in eye, bleeding, broken bones, dog and snake bite, poisoning, insect sting, chemical burn in eye, choking, electric shock, burns, unconsciousness, clothes on fire, and dialing 911. There is also a quiz in the back. The number of topics covered are OK, but the information is often incomplete. Three examples: 1) The section on bee stings omits any discussion on finding and removing the bee's stinger without accidentally getting more bee venom in the wound. 2) The section on dog bites omits any information on how to avoid getting bitten. 3) The section on broken bones has a grand total of 53 words of advice. In fact most sections of the book fail to mention ways to avoid injury, or methods of care that are included in other children's 1st aid books. Although this book is inexpensive - I feel it is not a good buy. For a little more money I highly recomend "The Safety Book for Active Kids", which is sold by Amazon.

3.0 out of 5 stars "Kids to the Rescue" is a book for learning., July 25, 1999
By A Customer
I think that kids my age (7)should read this book. If they have a frisky little sister like me, they're going to babysit her soon and they will need to know these things.
