Excellent advice, maps, & suggestions for family hiking.,

This review is from: Kids on the Trail: Hiking With Children in the Adirondacks (Paperback)
The Adirondack wilderness area in northern New York State has hundreds of various types of hiking trails, from the 4-5,000+ foot High Peaks area, to short hikes to waterfalls and other ecologically interesting places. The authors provide excellent recommendations on hikes that are appropriate for families with children. They provide clear directions and maps to specific trails and describe the length and degree of difficulty. For people who live in the region, or anyone thinking of vacationing in this beautiful area, this book would be an outstanding resource. The Adirondack Mountain Club is also sponsoring the Kid's Challenge Patch, which hikers can receive for completing a certain number of hikes from those listed in the book.

Great Way to Start Hiking with Kids,

This review is from: Kids on the Trail: Hiking With Children in the Adirondacks (Paperback)
When I first moved to the area, my kids were 5 and 3 and I had no clue where to go. Kids on the Trail has a great list of hikes in every part of the Adirondack Park. The hikes vary from mountains and caves to rivers and lakes. All the hikes are chosen with kids in mind, unlike the ADK Mountain Club books. Every weekend, I like to pull the book out and find someplace new to go. It also has great advice on how to making hiking with small kids fun. It is a great start to building a library of books on hikes in the Adirondacks. The Laurentian Chapter of the ADK Club gives out a Kids on the Trail patch to kids who complete at least two hikes from each section detailed in the book.

Helpful, although I thought a trail that was described as being 'rarely steep' was extremely steep!
