Helpful, although I thought a trail that was described as being 'rarely steep' was extremely steep!

The Adirondack wilderness area in northern New York State has hundreds of various types of hiking trails, from the 4-5,000+ foot High Peaks area, to short hikes to waterfalls and other ecologically interesting places. The authors provide excellent recommendations on hikes that are appropriate for families with children. They provide clear directions and maps to specific trails and describe the length and degree of difficulty. For people who live in the region, or anyone thinking of vacationing in this beautiful area, this book would be an outstanding resource. The Adirondack Mountain Club is also sponsoring the Kid's Challenge Patch, which hikers can receive for completing a certain number of hikes from those listed in the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Way to Start Hiking with Kids, April 11, 2010
This review is from: Kids on the Trail: Hiking With Children in the Adirondacks (Paperback)
When I first moved to the area, my kids were 5 and 3 and I had no clue where to go. Kids on the Trail has a great list of hikes in every part of the Adirondack Park. The hikes vary from mountains and caves to rivers and lakes. All the hikes are chosen with kids in mind, unlike the ADK Mountain Club books. Every weekend, I like to pull the book out and find someplace new to go. It also has great advice on how to making hiking with small kids fun. It is a great start to building a library of books on hikes in the Adirondacks. The Laurentian Chapter of the ADK Club gives out a Kids on the Trail patch to kids who complete at least two hikes from each section detailed in the book.

We found this book a great introductory teaching tool and motivator. With the help of Kids On The Trail my daughter enjoyed hiking in the Adirondacks. Mt. Jo and Mt. Hadley were amazing!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Starter Guide!, November 28, 2007
This review is from: Kids on the Trail: Hiking With Children in the Adirondacks (Paperback)
I picked this item up at the local big box book store for its shelf apeal. I haven't been disapointed. There is a focus on the high peak region. But, it is a great started for those thinking of trying some of the not so popular hikes away from the high peaks. This book allows a quick guide to most of the Adirondack Park as a whole. I use it with other resources for more spcific tail guides and hiking planning. I one case it was used on a full day of hiking (12 or so hours) that I my wife, kids and some of their friends did. This book will excite you and your family to get out and hike! (then buy more and more stuff to explore more and more, hehehe!)

This review is from: Kids on the Trail: Hiking With Children in the Adirondacks (Paperback)
Kids on the trail gives shallow coverage to a wide range of topics. Though there are some helpful hints and reminders, the content should be pretty obvious to anyone whose taken kids out even for a day at the park. That kids walk slowly, need snacks and water is no relevation. The second half of the book is devoted to a few Adirondack trail descriptions broken down by region. However, the trails discussed are but a tiny sample of the many in the area, so you're out of luck for many many routes. This section may yet prove useful, as it includes comments on terrain difficulty with kids in mind, but still this type of information, and more of it, would be readily available in a book devoted to Adirondack trails or even a topographical map. So if that is what you want, get a book devoted to that topic.
