Book Description

May 1997
Kid's Web Kit is an interactive CD-ROM and book package aimed at the 7-12 year-old age group, walking them through the process of designing a Web site. The biplatform CD consists of a five-step process which uses an animated, talking character to guide kids through each step. The process begins with kids choosing from professional web site "blueprints" and thematic background graphics to use as the foundations for their sites. Next they use their creative talents to decorate the backgrounds using their own familiar graphics program. Finally, they can add messages, sound files, and links to other web sites to each of their pages. Once they're satisfied with the finished product, they will upload their new sites to the Web.The accompanying full-color 50-page booklet provides a visual, road map-like reference for the kids to use while they create their Web sites. It contains diagrams of the user interface and blueprints of the various Web templates provided, plus advice on the best uses for each blueprint and graphic template, to help the young designers decide which backgrounds they like best. The book also includes "dressed up" samples to provide design ideas and inspiration.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Only people without kids will fail to understand why the Kid's WebKit is a cool idea. Shouldn't they be outside, playing with sticks and stuff? But kids are people too, and deserve their own web pages--especially when they are so easily constructed and can be based on such fun themes as Lost in Space or Pop Art. WebKit comprises a colorful 55-page booklet with kid-friendly instructions and a CD-ROM, which is really the focus of the package. It contains template graphics in various formats that suggest layout options, clip art, small-footprint pre-started html pages in a number of thematic designs, a library of sound clips, and a few other tidbits, including a copy of Microsoft Internet Explorer.

The system requirements for Kid's WebKit include a Mac or Windows PC, a paint program (not included) for altering and creating Web graphics, and at least one child age seven and up.

Review

This Windows/Mac CDROM kit uses a five-step process to introduce kids to the basics of creating a Web site. Don't expect HTML technicalities here: the idea is to follow a multimedia adventure and an animated guide. Kids ages 7 and older can choose form five 'blueprints' and graphic themes, and can customize their own creations. -- Midwest Book Review

2.0 out of 5 stars It seemed perfect at first glance, but it was hard to use., September 7, 1999

This review is from: Kid's Web Kit (Paperback)
I was really happy to get this at first, but it kept erasing my work and I still haven't gotten a wedpage up with it. Don't get me wrong, depending on what you want from your webpage, it might be exactly what you want, it just wasn't what I needed. I had difficulties editing it in my paint program and I wanted actual pictures of myself and a few of my drawings on the site and they didn't seem to fit anywhere. You may love this computer program and instruction booklet... just remember never to press the "back" space once you start, it will erase your work! You better finish everything as you go along perfectly the first time!! :) ~Christine >'.'<
