3.0 out of 5 stars Too many stories
I knew there were stories from successful adults in this book, but I did not expect them to start on page 11. The author described the book as having three sections - one for parents from the author, the celebrity stories, and resources. I was just very surprised and disappointed that Part 1 was so short.

After receiving a limited release of her book, this book describes how a mother works really hard to find the best journey for her child. This book happens to be a genuinely encouraging book. As a mother and a grandmother, I can tell you from experience that the 'kid who thinks outside the box' ends up with the ultimate success. Take it from me, I had my hands full with a wonderful child who was not easy, but as with the living legends in the book...my kid went on to become an exceptional success story. It's an easy read, and one that is meaningful to parents, teachers and kids. It's a basic book written by a mother who actually focusses on her child. If you want to have well-adjusted successful children that grow into well-adjusted successful adults, then you have to get this book, read it, highlight it, read it to your children when they feel down or when the going gets tough. This is an inspirational book for parents, moms and dad, and grandparents. A bible for the 21st century.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not The Usual "Bringing Up Kids" Book --- Much Better, March 24, 2005
By
This review is from: Kids Who Think Outside the Box: Helping Your Unique Child Thrive in a Cookie-Cutter World (Paperback)
After waiting for this book for more than a week, I found it to be somewhat different and better than I expected. First - a point about the book edition itself:

This book is NOT a hardcover book and is mislabeled in the Amazon description. My copy arrived as a soft cover, which is the only edition published. It is to be expected I suppose for a $10 book.

This book is not the usual "self-help" or "guidebook" for raising children. In many ways, this is a departure from the tried and true formats - and in my opinion is much better. The book has an original approach, and makes for engaging reading.

The book does not preach - or tell you what is right, what is better, how do do things. Instead, the book gets its points across through the narrative stories of the "living legends", who were not typical children - but rather, kids who would be labeled today as being different, nerdy, shy, "out of the box" children. The stories are inspiring, each is different, and each is a quick read... anywhere from 3-12 pages each. Some of the individuals included are not household names (although many are), but have made extraordinary achievements. The way the book is organized - achievers in science, sports, arts, politics/economics, etc. - also makes for a good differentiation among the contributions, and matches nicely the resource guide in the second half of the book.

The kids programs and materials described in the second half of the book have informative descriptions, and are a wealth of information. There is something there for any kid, with any "outside the box" interest. Just browsing through this section will encourage any parent to look for programs that go well beyond anything that they may see at their local school or community program.

The book is a wonderful, inspiring book. The kind of material that can be read more than once, and the kind of stories that can be shared with your children. This book is a keeper, and a bargain for $10 !

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding and Inspiring...Worthy of Ten Stars, December 11, 2005

This review is from: Kids Who Think Outside the Box: Helping Your Unique Child Thrive in a Cookie-Cutter World (Paperback)
I bought this book at a school book fair and not expecting all that much. Well this book was an uplifing surprise. In this book thirty well-known and famous "legends" as the author calls them wrote their own inspirational stories on how they began their lives "outside the box" and how they reached their personal level of excellence.

You had some very famous people in the book such as Paul McCartney and Mayor Bloomberg, but my favorite stories were by Mike Mullane, former NASA Astronaut and Rod Gilbert, New York Rangers Hockey Hero. What can I say except this book contains stories from people who count. Not the usual people that you see on TV. Vint Cerf, co-Creator of the Internet and Nobel Prize Winner Mario Molina...he discovered the hole in the Ozone layer of our earth.

The book speaks to parents who have these diamonds in the rough. The parents who have kids who are not the most popular now ...but they have what it takes to do something great as they go through their lives.

Parents ...I suggest you buy this book. I loved it. It says not only is it okay to have a child who thinks differently..nut it's great. I can go on and on...but this book "thinks different". It's not only worth reading but it's worth passing it along to a parent who can gain a little sustainance from it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read This Book With My Teen and It Hit Home!, November 7, 2005
This review is from: Kids Who Think Outside the Box: Helping Your Unique Child Thrive in a Cookie-Cutter World (Paperback)
I went through some of these stories with my teenage son and it worked for him. If you don't have a kid that is a "kid who thinks outside the box", then this book may not have the impact it did on our family. If you have a kid who may not be in the center of it all, but will be some day, then this is a great book for your family. We found it significant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Got It As An Early Christmas Gift....Amazing!, December 14, 2005

This review is from: Kids Who Think Outside the Box: Helping Your Unique Child Thrive in a Cookie-Cutter World (Paperback)
My fried left for vacation and before she left she gave me this book as one of my gifts. Our tradition is to exchange a varied mix of books for the holidays to keep us sane while taking care of the kids during the rest of the year. I read "Kids Who Think Outside The Box" first, because I had bought "You" by Dr. Oz over the summer and I loved it.

Well this book really unique. No guilt for moms, just an inspiring take on how parents should appreciate the unique qualities within their kids. I have four kids and sometimes it's easier to focus in on what's wrong...instead of what's write with my kids. After reading these amazing stories written by some significant achievers...I felt great about myself as a mom and great about my kids. The book is solid..basic and has the right values. It was definately good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent...Significantly Wonderful and Encouraging!, December 30, 2005

This review is from: Kids Who Think Outside the Box: Helping Your Unique Child Thrive in a Cookie-Cutter World (Paperback)
Finally Christmas is over and I've had some time to read a bit. This book has been sitting on my desk since October and I just got to it. It was fabulous... I'm past the age of raising kids, but the cover was engaging so I was drawn to it. This book has the right message. Paul McCartney, Spike Lee and Mayor Bloomberg are the famous contributors to this book, but it's the rest of the contributions from "those who have achieved" that meant something to me.

This book talks about the importance of letting a child become themselves so they can be the best they can be within society. It was fresh and poignant. I loved it. If you are into inspiration then this would work for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars We Read It ...We Loved It....We Passed It Along...Inspiring!, March 7, 2006

This review is from: Kids Who Think Outside the Box: Helping Your Unique Child Thrive in a Cookie-Cutter World (Paperback)
This book is a book that I actually purchased when I was researching the founding fathers of the Internet, and I came accross this book because Vint Cerf (one of the founders) contributed his story to this book.

Each story was contributed by someone who has succeeded in a different area. You have an academy award winning cinematographer, the first woman who crossed the Atlantic in a rowboat, a Nobel Prize Winner who discovered the hole in the Ozone Layer of our planet and then the famous participants...Paul McCartney, Mayor Bloomberg, Spike Lee etc. I loved the book for all the contributions. It said to my child that first of all no matter how you start out, you can achieve your goals. The moral is just stick to your guns and who you are. What I loved about this book is the celebration of a MOM embracing her son's individuality...I do that every day. Parents...it a quick read and a valuable one.
