Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-6-A new "Kids Can!" book, this time featuring the common mammals, amphibians, and birds of the United States and Canada. Information about each creature is presented in small bites, divided into categories with headings such as "Home Sweet Home" (dwellings), "What's for Dinner?" (diet), "Let's Talk" (animal sounds), and "Family Life" (procreation). There is also an occasional Native American legend, and suggested activities are included. One project requires polluting a bucket of water with various types of debris and substances, and then trying to restore it to its original, clean state. Instructions are not heavily detailed and often require imagination and experience to carry them out. The text is pleasantly conversational. Black-ink cartoons, range maps, realistic illustrations, and animal tracks decorate the pages. An ideal resource for camp counselors and an all-around pleasant way to learn about our neighbors in the wild.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for teachers, enjoyed by students., June 30, 1998

This is a very user-friendly guide book filled with both necessary factual information and many creative ideas. I use it as a classroom teacher to research wildlife subjects and prepare classroom extensions. The section on bats has been a big hit with all my classes--and with my own children. I know of no other book quite like it and highly recommend it.
