Editorial Reviews

Review

An unusual story book, this one is illustrated with photographs rather than illustrations. It’s a sweet tale about a girl and her doll in Paris with beautiful photographs by Stephanie Rausser. The story truly comes to life with a handmade doll made by Jess Brown that is featured in the book and can be purchased separately. - goop

About the Author

Stephanie Rausser is an advertising and editorial photographer who loves photographing kids, especially her daughter Kiki. She sees the world for all its beauty and humor and loves making it a little more fun, pretty and inviting. She lives in Northern California. Nina Gruener has written two other children's books, Above San Francisco and Above New York. She lives in Petaluma, California, with her husband and two children. Jess Brown has always made dolls for her children, Stella and Tiger. Combining her love of antique textiles and the sensibilities of a comfort doll, she created a line of small rag dolls for her shop, Maude, in Petaluma, California. The dolls quickly won the hearts of adults and children alike.

Kiki and Coco in Paris is a new family favorite in our home. Our 3 year old daughter wants to read this beautifully written book sometimes three times a day! It has blessed me so much to not only read the book with our girl, but to take the pages along on our own journey when we're done. My daughter often recites the last page before bedtime for her own loved ones, "je t'aime, Mama", or "je t'aime, Daddy". Every time we read the story she likes to find her new favorite page. The pictures are all so beautiful and she can relate to each one. Being a school teacher, I am attracted to the timeless quality of the book that only the classics have. This sweet story about a girl and her doll has an element of the classics Corduroy, and The Velveteen Rabit, yet it is an adventure completely its own. This book has found a home on our bookshelf, our laps, and our hearts!

This book is absolutely adorable! I instantly fell in love with the gorgeous photographs that illustrate this precious relationship between a girl and her doll. Their adventure throughout Paris is so relatable. My two little sisters (3 years old and 6 years old) both adore this book and beg for me to read it to them every night before bed, but I must admit that I love the book as much as they do. It is definitely a book all girls should have, both young and old!

My granddaughter has no interest in dolls, but I was intrigued by the idea of photos of a girl in Paris. There aren't enough photos of Paris and the child to satisfy me, and too many close up photos of the doll. If you want to fall in love with the doll(and order one), this will please you more than it did me.

What a wonderful gift for the holidays! I just bought four copies of this book for the little girls in my life. The story is one that will resonate with any child. When Kiki goes to Paris, dislocation turns to excitement and adventure. She joyfully explores all that Paris has to offer, from the open air markets, to the giant slide, to the claw footed bath tub filled with bubbles. There is just enough "home" in these scenes to make it clear that a new place does not have to be scary. Kiki's exploration of the city is joyful and fun loving. But trouble arrives when she loses her much-loved companion, the charming doll Coco. Needless to say, this crisis is happily resolved (the pair is reunited thanks to a curly-haired Parisian mutt). This is a great story to read aloud, but children and adults alike will want to linger over Stephanie Rausser's beautiful photos which really make the book. Each photo sparks an almost limitless number of sub-stories that our own imaginations can supply. Who else is sitting next to Kiki on that long flight to France? What are Kiki and Coco talking about at that tall table--is it a tea party? Does Kiki get that delicious looking ice cream cone every day? The story is refreshingly adult free (aside from the kindly doll maker who repairs Coco), and invites the reader to set his or her own imagination free. I found myself smiling with each new image, and I know younger readers will have just as much fun as I did with these delightful pictures.

This picture book is so well executed that I am torn between thinking of it as a children's book and a coffee table book--it's really both. Please, whatever you do, don't waste your time buying the Kindle version as that couldn't be a more wrong format for this masterpiece. The scale of the book is ginourmous: 10"x13", which is the perfect canvas for the beautiful photographs and the heartwarming story line. I purchased this for a two year old and on second thought, she is a bit young for it, so I will be holding onto it until she is old enough. That is, if I can bear to part with it... For anyone who has a strong love for the city of Paris and a special doll, this will bring tears to your eyes!

my daughter was born in Paris and lived there until age three. Now at 4, reading this almost each night, she anticipates moving back as soon as possible with all the amazing adventures a child can have there :) the pictures are just gorgeous (it's not often a children's book uses real photos) and the words are specially written in the third person present. Its not too short and not too long. An instant classic. Just beware; you may have to buy your little one a 'Coco' doll. They're amazing as well, but very pricey.

Stephanie Rausser's images are out of this world! And the amazing idea of creating a children's book that tells a story with such magical words throughout these images was so beautifully done. A must have for all girls...who love their dolls and will always remember their favorite ones. We all have a favorite. Being able to see Kiki's bond to her favorite doll was very emotional. Love love love it! :)
