5.0 out of 5 stars Forget it until you need it!
The beauty of this stainless steel survival tool is that you can tuck it away any where (wallet, glove box) and use it when you need it for emergencies. The saw and blade alone are highly valuable survival tools. The ruler and bottle opener are handy for everyday uses.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK in a real pinch, not good for every day use.
I hope nobody is considering this tool for anything other than having an emergency backup to what should already be every day carry tools. It's decent quality, but I certainly wouldn't put it at "top notch" status. And the functions are mostly hard to pull off with any degree of force. The knife is on a short side which makes it difficult to use. The "screwdriver"...

The "screwdriver" which is little more than one corner ground to a flat-head shape is only useful in wide-open areas with larger screws, and with the knife on the same edge, one has to be very careful indeed.

The only tools that I found to be decently easy to use are the saw and bottle opener. The saw since it was on the long side and the opposite side (ruler) allows for a decent grip. The Bottle opener is equally easy to operate.

The can opener forces you to use the saw as a finger grip and the wrench slots pretty much require that any bolts are not very tight, and that's if you can get the tool on it in the first place.

This really didn't fit well in my money clip wallet, but it might in a full sized wallet. So, as an emergency backup, it might get you out of a jam and could actually come in handy once in a while. Forget using it as a keychain tool... it's way too dangerous to leave out in the open (and the plastic cover that came with mine was laughably cheap). It won't make it through the TSA unless someone's asleep at the wheel, so traveling with it isn't really an option either.

I'd give it a 2.5 star, but for the money, it's hard to beat, so I'm rounding up. You could always toss one in the glove compartments, toolboxes, bookbag, etc. but I strongly recommend a Small Leatherman Micra or Squirt if compact is what you seek. Those are FAR more functional (AND SAFE!!!) in comparison. Get it if your curiosity or gearlust must be sated.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth having., January 25, 2008

You may look at this product and think its silly, but I say why not? I like to be prepared for any situation, but I don't carry my a backpack full of tools around with me everywhere. At least if something happens when I am on the road, or anywhere else, Ill have one useful tool always with me. Its also handy for those occasions where you get stuck with a beer that needs a bottle opener with none in sight.

I can't find anything bad to say about this tool. I scoffed at the blade until I mashed my thumb across it. It cut through my considerable thumb skin and almost bled. Not a bad cut for less than 1/8" of the handy little blade. I have used the bottle opener and protractor, but the other tools I'm sure would function as good as the rest. +5 stars for being exactly the indestructible tool my wallet needed.

1.0 out of 5 stars very disappointing!, January 29, 2011

There is no knife edge! That area of the product is so thick it could NEVER be honed to a cutting edge! I've bought this product before, but from Think Geek. It was nice and slim, and (among other things)had a good, useable blade. (The TSA was well justified to confiscate it when I forgot to put it in my checked luggage.)

I was looking to replace the confiscated unit...and received this....trash! Yes, It was less expensive - but only by $3-$4...!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT BUY THIS if you want a blade that can cut anything...even thread, etc.

Some factory in China has been turning these things out for years, and they've always been garbage. You can't cut JACK with the knife or the saw (the saw teeth are not sharpened). What function does the round hole serve? Any? No. If you try to use any of the "wrenches", you'll probably gouge your hand on the "can opener". And who needs a wrench for a damned wing nut? Seriously? Anyway, it will open a bottle. But so does a table. Buy a folding multi-tool.

When I saw this handy looking multi-tool, I was excited. Finally, a way to carry just the bare essentials without having to fill up my pockets I thought. Well, I was wrong.

The bottle opener breaks the tops off glass bottles dusting the liquid goodness and surrounding areas with glass shards making your beverage undrinkable!

The other tools are pretty pathetic. The "wrench" is probably worse at loosening and tightening bolts than your fingers and the "knife" would have a tough time cutting a hard cheese.

Even though this little multi-tool is cheap, it will actually waste you time and money as it ruins your bottled beverages. Good idea, poor execution.

I'm really glad I didn't give these as stocking stuffers :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly useful for the price!, November 8, 2009
This review is from: Kikkerland CD401 Classic Survival Tool (Tools & Home Improvement)
I've had numerous times where this product has helped me out. This is so portable that I can always have it with me. I see no reason why I'll ever not carry this thing. One con is that the position of the two blades make it such that using it is slightly awkward, but I suppose that's unavoidable.

This tool is amazing. I keep it in my wallet (it really is the size of a credit card) and use it all the time. My only advice would be to *not* forget that it's in your wallet and attempt to take it through Airport Security.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's a good "urban" survival tool, November 26, 2007
This review is from: Kikkerland CD401 Classic Survival Tool (Tools & Home Improvement)
I am pretty happy with this purchase, it makes for a pretty handy "gee I wish I could open this bottle/cut this paper/open this can oh wait I can!" device. Anyway, the one I used the most is the bottle opener, and it takes a little patience to get used to opening bottles this way. Definetly a handy tool to keep in your wallet. The inclusion of a "compass hole" (the big circle with the lines around it) seems unecessary, since it's designed for a button compass to be pressed into it (at least, as far as I can tell).
