Bought some of these for the kids for Christmas (9 months ago). loved them. thought they were like most emergency lights and that the hand crank would re-charge either a battery or a capacitor, hence no more battery changes... Recently noticed that the lights were getting dim and not working on one of them when turned on. The crank worked and the lights were very bright but NOT holding a charge. Opened the units and (as described in the little blurb on Amazon) they have 2 batteries. These batteries are NOT rechargeable and there is NO recharging circuit in the device. The crank operates a generator that sends it's power directly to the lights. This is a poor substitute for an emergency light as you have to keep cranking to have any light. On a side note, while the light costs ~$8.00 the two replacement batteries is about $12.

I did NOT buy these on Amazon and this review is NOT a reflection on Amazon service or products. Just and FYI that the common assumption that flashlights with hand cranks have no batteries that need replacing is FALSE. This type of light (and the black cat and green frog that are like them) are for novelty purposes only (IMHO).

Nobody can resist this flashlight. Just wanted to mention that this light also has an automatic/non-manual option- just slide the first switch over. The second switch keeps the recharging "pump" retracted within the light. Can also get these at Old Navy during the Halloween season. We got ours in early October of 2009. One of them is still truckin'; the other just died recently, but was owned by a toddler- nuff said. Made so well that it has nine lives.

Addendum on 11/04/11: Still at Old Navy as well.

Unlike other rechargeable flashlights I've used, this one stays bright and does not need frequent recharging. On switch is locked for hands-free use. Lightweight, adorable, well made. Great for kids but I use it in my dark research lab!

I bought this as a stocking stuffer for Christmas 2012. My kid loves cats and we have a black cat, so I thought it would be a cute and practical gift. We used it on Christmas Day and I noticed the slide button that keeps the charging handle hidden, stopped working. The charging handle is always exposed when not in use. I didn't contact the seller cause it was really cosmetic and didn't affect the flashlight. Tonight is the first time my daughter really used the flashlight. She said she kept having to squeeze the handle or it would go dark. I turned off a few lights and tested it out. I would pull the handle and the eyes would light up and immediatly go dim. If I kept squeezing it nonstop it would be bright enough to see, which makes this impractical. This would only be a quality/value item if found at the dollar store.

I received one of these as a Christmas gift and to be fair, I don't know if it was purchased on Amazon, but on the assumption that this is a common problem because it's mentioned in another review as well... the hand crank won't come out again, so there's no way to recharge. I opened it from the box. Flipped both switches. The light came on and the hand crank popped. I pushed it about three times and then it wouldn't come back out again. Originally, I thought it was a clever little addition to my emergency kit, but it didn't even survive 5mins out of the package.

Does have that intimidation factor that the big mag-lights have, but this cute little light hasn't let me down. Great when ever you need an accessible light around the house for odd jobs here or there. Reliable and solid. The battery is recharged by hand pumps, so you can aim the light while your doing it (unlike the shaky flashlights). Buy this, but keep a close eye on the cat ladies! They will try and steal it!

This product is incredibly cheaply manufactured, but works as described and has provided plenty of stocking filler value for money for my daughter. It no longer holds a charge, but will work off the dynamo, which is okay.

If you're looking for something cute and unique for someone who loves cats, then I think this is the perfect gift. I was pretty impressed that the little light eyes were as powerful as they turned out to be.
