Product Description

Admittedly, Hydro Power is probably the wrong name for this Kikkerland designed product, it was catchy. What they are, are water activated batteries made by a kind of powdered carbon capacitor. This process which was discovered by Japanese inventor Susumu Suzuki, requires moisture to activate the carbon particles to produce energy. They produce the same amount of energy as normal batteries, but they are made of carbon, which is everywhere, and not processed metal, which is hard to find, they are much cheaper, take less energy to produce and are non-toxic.

This of course has informed our decision to NOT give the other one as a gift as we had originally intended.

I bought mine off of another site for a few bucks less - but it was final sale so I'm stuck with it.

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. When it works it is great, but when it doesn't we can't figure out why.

I loved the *idea* of this calculator, however I was sorely disappointed when I received it. Let me give a pros/cons rundown:

Pros:
- Environmentally friendly! No chucking batteries into the landfills.
- Green buttons!

Cons:
- Doesn't hold a charge.
- The buttons stick - it's not really practical for doing a calculation.
- Press 3, get 30! Press 2, get a decimal point! Press 5, get "ERROR 00000" - super useful!
- You can barely see the screen. The only time you could use this (if it WAS functional) would be in the morning. Before the sun comes up. When you are guaranteed no charge. Ha. When the light is shining on it you cannot see ANYTHING. So it might work better when the sun is on it - but who knows?! You can't actually see what's displayed on the screen!

Yeah, so it's very disappointing. I bet a child would have fun playing with this though. It looks cool, but that's about all it does.

I bought mine off of another site for a few bucks less - but it was final sale so I'm stuck with it. Or rather, the landfill is. Rich, right? I bought it thinking I was creating less waste, and in the end I've created more waste.

Needless to say - avoid this product.

My son bought two of these, one as a gift, at Rainforest Cafe in the US. The build quality is very, very poor. It came with no instructions, so one is led to believe that one merely fills the three 'batteries' with water, and voila. His didn't work and I took to the web for a solution and found lots of complaints about this item arriving DOA. This of course has informed our decision to NOT give the other one as a gift as we had originally intended. Unfortunately it would cost as much in gas, not to mention time, to return it.

AVOID!

Received this today. Loaded the cells with water, plugged them in...nothing, nada, no life. Additionally when I ordered this, I also ordered the Kikkerland water power clock. Same story. They are now both repacked and ready to be returned. I will be copying this review, with a few rearrangements of words, on to the Kikkerland water power clock's customer review page.
