They're pretty poor construction.

Maybe the powering up and turning it off shortened its lifespan?

The first one I got died within a week. The seller issued a replacement order, and the replacement also died within a week. The second one didn't quite look right when it worked either. I had an older version of this product that I bought elsewhere in late 2007 which worked for just over three years. The current version seems to be very cheaply made and totally unreliable.

Plus-one on the quick death: Mine buzzed and went out within 5 minutes of plugging it in. Some component in the base circuit board must have smoked, based on the smell.

My 6 year old son received one of these from some friends of ours. It was a few years old at the time. He loved it and used it every day for about 2 weeks until it quit working. I found this one which looks identical and was reasonably priced, so I ordered it for him. He uses it as a nightlight. It lasted a few months and then quit working. It would be nice if you could just buy the bulb and replace it. Still deciding if I'll buy another one and try to get my son to use it more sparingly.

My first one died within a few weeks, so I bought another. That died too after only a few weeks. Maybe it's because I didn't leave it on all the time? Maybe the powering up and turning it off shortened its lifespan? I wish these came with a guarantee. Otherwise, they're fascinating!

Bought one, plugged it worked flawlessly for maybe 15seconds. It then only glowed white at the bottom and stank up the room with smoke. Not exactly an inspiring performance for something which should be left on all night while your kids are sleeping, eh?

Have a new one in my hands which works thus far, we'll see how it goes. Very cool, and I know my sons will love it.

I ordered this for my boyfriend and myself because our last night light went out and we both thought this one looked pretty neat. While it does look pretty badass, it can't light up a room. at all. so keep that in mind before you buy it :)

I got a couple of these a few years back. They're pretty poor construction. They kind of fall out of the socket, and the top part doesn't feel like it screwed into the bottom part properly. One died after only a couple of weeks, and I've stopped using the second one.
