Fun. And Sharpens Great.,

This review is from: Pencil Sharpener: Robot (Toy)
Here's the best thing about this walking robot pencil sharpener - it sharpens pencils - really sharpens them. To a point that could be lethal.
Sure, the little guy is cute. The idea is fun. You sharpen your pencil while at the same time winding up the robot. When you're done, the little guy will walk across your table, across your counter, across the floor, making a hissing mechanical noise. But the price and functionality take him over the top. So if you use pencils and you want to add a little fun to your desktop, this robot is highly recommended.

I bought three of these: one worked fine, the second was over-wound and ruined within five seconds, and the third slipped from my child's hand and exploded into all its component parts when it hit the floor. While user error or carelessness are clearly to blame for these incidents, I frankly would like a little more durability in an item designed for kids. It's cute and clever, but purchase at your own peril.

I bought this as a gift for my friend because we were doing "Secret Santa". I had no idea what he liked because he never specified anything. All he said was "it doesn't really matter". The pencil sharpener looks exactly like the picture and it just looked great! The box that housed this little sharpener also had the robot theme going on. The sharpener itself works okay, it's nothing special. Sharpening your pencil does wind up the robot though, so it works as advertised. It's a fun to use and great for young boys; my 7year old cousin wanted one for himself and he asked me to buy one for him too. :D
Update: I just realized that the price for this sharpener has doubled in price! I bought it for only $5.95, and I really don't feel like it's worth $12. There are other places selling the same sharpener for a much cheaper price.

Opening too small for non-standard pencils,

Be warned if you plan to use this with a non-standard pencil -- the opening is very narrow. I bought this to use with colored pencils that are approximately 8 mm in diameter, and they didn't fit.I gave it to a friend who complained that even after being wound up, the robot wouldn't walk across a flat surface. It did satisfactorily sharpen his standard-size pencils, though.

This is a thoroughly cool toy/tool. It will sharpen pencils, but not thick ones. The cool part is that when you sharpen a pencil (of the right size), it winds up the spring that makes the robot walk. Very cool. One problem is that if you have to sharpen a pencil from a completely unsharpened state, you may have to let the robot walk around for a few iterations or you'll over crank the spring. Still, lots of people who've seen this think it's the coolest pencil sharpener ever.

I like the sharpener, it's really cute, but it holds pencils so tightly that it tends to break the point and pull the lead out
so its very difficult to actually use as a sharpener. The sharpener opening is just too tight, at least for a No. 2 / HB pencil. |
