Book Description

January 1984
Winner of the MacNamee award in Ireland for best GAA related book, Kildare GAA is an exhaustive history of Ireland’s most popular games in the county which won four All Ireland titles in a 23 year period before 1928 but has inexplicably failed to win since. Politics, religion, culture, folklore and social history are all drawn in to the fabric of the story and a comprehensive 136-page statistical section lists every player who has played for the county between 1884 and 1983, as well as important club teams and results.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Kildare GAA was written in the period 1977-82. I started my research with a long and fascinating trawl through 130 years of local national and local newspaper files, Leinster Leader, Kildare Observer and Nationalist, back to the 1860s,. Armed with dates, names and scores, I then followed with an extensive series of interviews wit players, officials and followers throughout the county. The resulting book is a bit of a tear-jerker because Kildare deserved more than their four All Ireland titles, won in 1905, 1919, 1927 and 1928, but was a deeply satisfying book to have written. Most of the interviewees were old men, Gussy Nevin in Prosperous was 104 years old when I met him. I was still a teenager. The sustained interest in this book is a tribute to the memory of those great Gaels, almost of all of whom have now passed on. Ar Dheis Dé.
