Book Description

March 1999
This book is a fascinating personal account of climbing the highest mountain on the African continent as a family. The struggle and decision process to start organizing a trip to the depths of Africa are revealed. Meeting up with other climbers and trekking the lower flanks of the mountain is detailed. The difficulty of reaching the crater rim and continuing to the summit in the thin atmosphere is vividly described. At different phases of the climb, the thoughts and feelings of the various family members are exposed. After the strenuous climb, there is time to relax and enjoy the untamed nature on a safari to one of the big game parks. A wealth of information on the climbing routes, equipment, contacts, climate, history is contained in the appendixes. All the information required to organize your own expedition step by step is provided in a concise and easy to use format.

A must read for anyone interested in outdoor adventures and fitness. Mountaineering is a great way to condition the body and push the body and mind to their limits. -- Frank Zane - Three time Mr. Olympia

I've been higher than the Streckert family, but I didn't have to work as hard to get there. -- Wally Shirra - Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo Astronaut

It's rare for mountain climbing adventures to be family affairs. Thanks, Hal, for your fascinating account. -- Pete Schoening - Himalayan Climbing Legend

3.0 out of 5 stars It's hard to get past the author's arrogance, August 29, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Kilimanjaro Adventure (Paperback)
Hal Streckert thinks alot of himself, and he keeps reminding us of how great he is every chance he gets. As I am going to Kilimanjaro myself in 4 weeks, I basically enjoyed the tale of this family's trek up the mountain but I just couldn't keep from rolling my eyes and cringing at the tone of the author and his trite writing style. I'd give examples from his book to show you what I mean but I just can't be bothered to pick it back up since I finished it. If there were more books out there on this topic, I'd give him only 2 stars, but the fact is, there's unfortunately not alot to choose from. Try "Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro" by Stephen Carmichael which is interesting, factual and without the Hal-ster's self aggrandizing tone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative, enjoyed family angle, April 10, 2000
This review is from: Kilimanjaro Adventure (Paperback)
I disagree with the crankier reviews. This was a fun read and an excellent description of exactly what to expect on the "tourist" route to the summit. The family angle added some human interest: Kyle is a typical 17 year old who doesn't want to do anything that doesn't involve at least six other teenagers, and he certainly doesn't want to climb Kili with the 'rental units. But he goes anyway, and...well, read the book. I didn't find Hal arrogant at all, and enjoyed viewing this "peak" experience through the eyes of folks who could be the family next door. I also recommend Carmichael & Stoddard's book, especially if you want specifics how to plan, what to bring, etc. Read this one for fun, flavor and a good description of the experience.

It just goes to show that with a competitive spirit and a loving family you can always stand on top of the world.
