Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

John Dahl, the director behind Red Rock West and The Last Seduction, is the director and cowriter of Kill Me Again, and it shows. Dahl's love of modern noir, ruthless women, Western landscapes, and double-crosses shines through. Joanne Whalley-Kilmer plays Fay, a spitfire who has somehow gotten herself mixed up with a psychotic thug (Michael Madsen, of course) named Vince. Fay runs off with a whole lot of Vince's stolen money and hires loser private eye Jack Andrews (Val Kilmer) to help her fake her own death. To say any more would spoil a terrific, intricate plot that keeps heating up as interested parties close in on Jack, Fay, and the money. The then-married Kilmer and Whalley-Kilmer clearly have a great time playing off each other, and Madsen adds another brilliantly played lunatic to his oeuvre. Enjoy it, and don't trust anybody. --Ali Davis

This review is from: Kill Me Again (DVD)
Considered from the "outer" point of view, this is a pretty good movie. Well-developed, uniquely-identified, memorable characters; excellent acting by all; crisp, often amusing, dialogue; well-plotted and paced with surprising twists and turns, and a surprising climax. The haunting background music (William Olvis) alone is worth the seeing the movie for.

But it is on the "inner" level that this movie really struck at me. It is set in Nevada (Winnemucca, Reno, Vegas, Overton - "Where's that?" "It's up by Lake Mead") where I lived for many years. [For those of you who have read much spiritual/metaphysical literature, it is no coincidence that the national mecca of "vice" is a "desert experience". This remark is NOT a put-down of Nevada - amidst such sharp natural beauty, our dilemma is sharply drawn there - and that's a plus.]

Somehow the dark, horrifically-empty aspect of modern American life - which is itself especially starkly on view in NV - is precisely nailed by this film. The film might aptly be subtitled - "The Illusion of Love in a Dead Culture like ours". Yes, outwardly, it's about the astonishing betrayals and cruelty everybody - good or bad - will go through to get their hands on the attache case with the mob's money. But inwardly it's about the search for a love that has sunk irretrievably below the surface of one of Nevada's beautiful lakes. If you think this fanciful, tell me this: why, as the winner finally leaves Nevada with the money, was "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" - so movingly sung, torch-style - selected for the final credits? It was, rather, tears that were getting in mine!

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally on DVD, January 25, 2001

This review is from: Kill Me Again (DVD)
Kill me again has never been released in digital formant in US. There is a Japanese Ld long time ago but very hard to get nowadays. So this MGM dvd release is a very good news. This movie is very under rated and didn't get wide release but remains a video favorite. The story has been done before and has been copied all over again on various B movie. About a seductive young woman who used a private detective to fake her death to get away with money she stole from her abusive boyfriend. The DVD is in full screen only and no 5.1 Dolby Digital but for this type of low budget movie probably we don't miss much as the Dolby 2.0 surround is quite good with occasional thunder can be heard from your rear speakers. I would have given it 5 stars if MGM give an English subtitle option (an option that has no longer available for all current MGM DVD releases, what a shame). Get this rare gem, you won't be sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars a sleeper, November 22, 1999

This review is from: Kill Me Again [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I am no movie buff, but I know a good one when I see it. This movie is akin to 'Red Rock West' with Nick Cage, or 'The eye of God', and 'Clay Pigeons' with Vince Vaughn. I even added it to my scrappy (less than 20) video collction, and that's saying a lot! The only thing missing is a score from Chris Isaac.
