A Brilliant Drama, June 16, 2000

This review is from: Kill All the Lawyers (Unbound)
This is one of the best books I've read in ages. I highly recommend it. William Deverall's characters are real and his characterization is insightful. This book grabs you from the beginning and keeps you hooked - Deverall's storytelling is exceptional.
The law office of Pomeroy, Macarthur, Brovak and Sage is a dysfunctional one at best. These young laywers are learning their lessons the hard way - by trying not to get killed! Someone is killing lawyers that are taking on "morally questionable" clients - and Deverall keeps you on the edge, guessing whodunit and who's the next victim.
Deverall's collection of characters is diverse. They range from Brian Pomeroy - a hardworking, intense lawyer, who's working hard to keep his extra marital affair a secret. Max Macarthur is the lawyer that's holding the firm together by sheer willpower, while John Brovak is a crass man whose life is on the fast track - fast cars, loose women and copious amounts of drugs and alcohol. Augustina Sage is a strong, determined woman of Metis descent whose need for a strong stable man leads her to the not-so-straight edged Judge Russell. The final addition to this interesting group of laywers is Wentworth Chance - a bright naive articling student.
Read it - you won't be disappointed!

Don't Kill All The Reviewers, May 23, 2000
I thought that Deverell did an excellent job of maintaining the reader's interest throughout the book, although his choice of method to reveal the killer was cliche and really quite unsupported. Deverell's style of letters from Pomeroy mixed with sections of story was quite well used. Generally good, a few weak points, including miscellaneous love interests, but a pleasant read.

Deverell is an award winner, and will soon rank as one of your favorite mystery writers! "Kill All The Lawyers" has a believable plot, and it will have you guessing and second-guessing to the very end. Author Deverell, who was a renowned practicing trial attorney in Canada, writes all his mystery/legal thrillers with an authentic, and often comedic flare. Don't stop after reading "Kill All the Lawyers," but keep on with the others (e.g., "April Fool" and "Trial of Passion") that are in Deverell's mysteries that feature his wonderful character Arthur Beauchamp.
