Book Description

September 1, 2004
In May 1998, in the small northern California town of Cottonwood, Norman Daniels, 28, opened a wax-sealed envelope given to him by friend Todd Garton, 27, who claimed to be a paid assassin for an elite organization called the Company. Now the Company was recruiting Daniels. His initiation would be to kill the person named inside the envelope: Carole Garton, 28 - Todd Garton's pregnant wife. On May 16, 1998, Daniels shot Carole Garton five times, killing her and her unborn child. But police launched an intense investigation that revealed the sordid story behind the murder. In a dramatic trial, the depths of Garton's depravity and Daniels's desperation would be revealed-and justice would finally be served.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pathological Liar Turns Cold Blood Killer, July 22, 2006
This review is from: Kill or Be Killed (Mass Market Paperback)
Wow! This is the best of Robert Scott's true crime books. In this story of skilled pathological liar Todd Jesse Garton, readers are given an indept view into the working, manipulative mind of a text book narcissist; the only type who kill their loving, devote wife and unborn son (8 months gestation). A Scott Peterson, before that name was even famous.

Todd Garton used the information he obtained from movies and books to convince his friends that he was much more than he had ever been (or could have been). Once they fall prey to his tangled web, their lives are changed forever. Readers follow suspenseful tale of (1) Lynn Noyes, Garton's mistress and co-conspirator in the murders; (2) Normal Daniels, the friend coerced into murder; and (3) Dale Gordon, whose only "true" crime was knowing Garton. Because of the skillful lies and manipulations from Garton, all three of them currently pass time behind bars, hopefully awaiting parole in the future. Yet true justice came in the form of Garton spending the remainder of his life on death row at San Quentin.

Excellent reading. Emotion and thought provoking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unusual crime story, July 15, 2007
This review is from: Kill or Be Killed (Mass Market Paperback)
Carole Garton was murdered on May 16, 1998, at Redding, California. This book tells of the murder and the resulting trial. It does a good job of setting the scene and then tells of the trial, which illustrates the good job done by the prosecutor of a difficult case, since the defendant was not the guy who shot the victim five times, and in fact was not at the scene. This is a fascinating case and the story is well told in this book

4.0 out of 5 stars Some people will believe anything, September 8, 2006
This review is from: Kill or Be Killed (Mass Market Paperback)
This story is so unbelievably sad, not only because of the death of a promising young woman and her unborn baby, but also because of the wasted lives of three of the most gullible adults in the world who now sit behind bars.

Secret agent wannabe Todd Garton is somehow able to convince three other adults that he is part of an organized group of hired assasins. By enlisting their help, he comes dangerously close to killing one man, and then orchestrates the death of his own wife and unborn child.

I'm sure all three accomplices now sit in jail wondering how in the world they could have possibly believed and participated in such a ridiculous plan.
