Book Description

April 9, 2001
Exposing people to the things that they try hard to avoid - things like fears, and phobias, and painful memories - has long been a standard therapeutic technique. The same kind of exposure response prevention (ERP) has now become a major theory in addiction treatment. Even though ERP conflicts with traditional approaches, breakthrough studies have begun to appear that find that ERP has an impressive long-term effectiveness rating. This text aims to help addicts learn to deal with real world temptations directly and safely through a technique called photocard ERP, which makes use of colour photographs of the readers' drugs of choice or of persons using these drugs. Readers prepare to view the photographs by exploring their motivation for using and their readiness to stop. Deep breathing and body tension scanning techniques help readers endure the uncomfortable feelings and the deep cravings that the photographs stir and ultimately help them ride out their craving.

I was shocked at first from not only the title but by the concept that this book is promoting. How real can you get! The book made me think about what I had done not only to myself but to my family. I was amazed by how I reacted to the graphic photos on the website. My pulse rose and I really had a hard time looking at the photos. This procedure has made me think hard and long about my addiction, my problems, my current state of life and hopefully with all pieces that fall into play, my recovery.

Kill the Craving review April 21, 2001

Format:Paperback
I was intrigued by the name so I bought it. I work in the CD field and am alwaya interested in a more eclectic ways to keep my clients clean. This seems to fit what my clients are looking for. It is more of a realistic outlook to a very hard field to work in. The book and espeically the ERP makes the person look at their behaviors behind why they have a problem. It then gives the person alternative methods or tools to cope with feelings and thoughts that may giver them a reason to drink or drug. I am pleased with the book and will definately give a copy to my clients. Nice job!!!

I bought this book last week and found it fantastic. I have a addiction for about 5 years now and I am still struggling to find the right tool to help me. Reading this book and seeing the ERP photos made me think exactly how hard it can be. The book made me see that I need to encompass ALL aspects of this disease in order to recover. It made me ponder when I heard the title and then to see the photos, it send me over the edge. The concept is straight on and best of all I need the reality the book represents. Thank you for the chance to beat my cravings. If you have any more information please make it available. I can't wait to see the ERP website. Keep up the good work.....
