About the Author

With over 35 million albums sold and more media face-time than most active politicians, Ted Nugent has earned his status as an American icon. A noted outdoorsman and supporter of law enforcement, Ted has been lauded for his work as a national spokesman for D.A.R.E. and the non-profit Ted Nugent Kamp for Kids. The Ted Nugent Spirit of the Wild TV Show has time and again been voted the #1 Hunting Show on the Outdoor Channel. His previous books include God, Guns, & Rock N Roll (a national bestseller), Kill It & Grill It and Bloodtrails I and II.

SHEMANE NUGENT--at first glance--a stylish, blue-eyed blond who is as much at home shopping Neiman Marcus in a pinstriped suit as she is riding motorcycles with her son-looks more like a soccer mom than the wife of rock legend Ted Nugent. In fact, she's both. Shemane manages a multimillion-dollar financial empire, has appeared on numerous television shows including Entertainment Tonight, VH1, and Access Hollywood, and has been interviewed by Howard Stern, Hannity & Colmes, and Greta Van Susteren, among others. Shemane also produces, edits, and cohosts the award-winning Ted Nugent Spirit of the Wild TV show. Together, the Nugents have written a best-selling wild game cookbook, Kill It & Grill It. Ted and Shemane have four children and two grandchildren. They live in Michigan.

Love him or hate him, the rock & roll legend Ted Nugent is probably the most outspoken advocate for "blood sports" today. And when he turns to the domestic side of hunting -- the preparation and cooking of wild game meat -- you'll find it a lot harder to hate him because you'll love the dishes he prepares and the way he talks about them.

The attitude of this book is "Life is a BBQ" (a direct Nugent quote), and most of the 22 chapters are followed by one or more recipes. Underlying the cooking theme is Nugent's reverence for wildlife and his unapologetic explanation of what it takes for wildlife to thrive in the modern world. Nugent argues that habitat destruction, not the hunter, poses the greatest threat to wildlife; that the cruelty of nature offers no reason for man not to participate; that hunters are the greatest conservationists; and that wildlife is a renewable resource. These are truths that hunters should shout from the mountaintops.

Kill It & Grill It is worth having in your kitchen. It's a unique cookbook for sure.

As my husband loves to hunt wild game, I bought this book for him as a farce. However, it has turned out to be a great purchase. I was at a loss as how to clean and cook wild game until "Kill It and Grill It" came along. This is the only cookbook I've bought that my husband hasn't complained about and it's an entertaining and "colorful" read as well.

This book is part cookbook, part 'Nuge stories and philosophy. Of course, you'd expect that with anything from Ted Nugent.

It's not a very thick book. It has recipes for a varied array of game, but most animals only get a couple recipes, which is a shame, since 1 kill will frequently yield huge amounts of meat. Do you want to make the same thing with your entire deer? The recipes, themselves, are sound. They advise treating the meat in the correct ways to maximize flavor and tenderness. The problem is that they're a limited selection of all you can do with game. I would have preferred a description of how each animal's meat is different from the common, domesticated relatives. For instance, how is a deer different from an elk, a cow, a lamb, etc? They're all closely related, but the different fat contents, diets, muscle biology, etc. mean they taste and are cooked differently. For fowl, the range is even greater: chickens are nothing like ducks or ostriches, for example. Even wild and domestic turkeys are drastically different. Also, like their domesticated relatives, the different cuts of game meat are good for different purposes and methods. This book doesn't go into those differences.

In short, while the recipes will work for the hunter who can't cook his kill into something palatable, they won't give him a very deep understanding of properly cooking game.

There is NOTHING better than being in the outdoors and bagging your own chow, be it mammalian or fish. Ted and Shemane have HIT THE MARK! The recipes are EXCELLENT and being a predator myself, grilling a tasty rack of deer with Ted's recipe for marinade DON'T GET ANY BETTER! Rock on.

As an avid predator and self taught chef I think this book is a grand slam home run. If you do not like this book then you are a prima-donna hunter or a scavenger. Talking turkey is what hunting and gathering is all about. Kill it, dress it, chill it and eat it. Most meathheads have other people kill and prepare their animals. I call those people scavengers. Very much like the vulture. Predators, are those of us who collect our food ourselves and prepare it properly for the fabulous feast. This book is the ultimate interpretation of that process. From beginning to end the "Nugents" have teamed up to put everything into perspective. Having properly declared hunting a sacred event, they take you on a safari of the mind, soul and body. If you believe, as I do, that hunting is a lifestyle, not just a hobby, then this book is for you. On the other hand, if you are a yellow bellied sap sucker who brings their zip lock bags to the buffet line for early bird specials, don't waste your time trying to understand the real world. It is already too late for you. The Nugents talk straight from the soul and shoot even straighter. Their way of cooking is born out of respect for the animal and dignity for the hunt. It is a real pleasure to be invited into someones home through a book instead of a television. This is really a magical mystery tour of the senses. I have tried some of the formulas and have enjoyed the wholesome approach to killing it and grilling it. In a canned world filled with fast foods and fat people, exploring the alternatives should be mandatory in the school of life. On the other hand, the more people eating boffo bugers at dingy drive throughs, The less I have to deal with hobby hunters who kill a wonderful animal for a photograph.Read more ›

I love this book! Except for the occasional foul language. This book caught my eye because I recently took up hunting again after hitting a deer with my Kia when driving to the supermarket to buy vegetarian food at the nattering of my now-ex-girlfriend. The irony seemed too much so, I elected to bring out my old .30 caliber shootin' iron from retirement. I had blasted six bambis by the time Ted's tome came out and have been immersed for the last two weeks regaling with Ted and his preposterously pulchritudinous wife Shemane in the joys of subduing and munching on nature's tastiest creatures! There are plenty of details on how to gut and prepare game for the cooking pot and your finest tableware. Ted also provides plenty of yummy and innovative recipes for freshly zapped wild boar, buffalo, pheasant, and (my favorite) venison. Gobble gobble yum yum!!! There are plenty of insights on hunting for the new shooter, but I found myself familiar with most. What I particularly enjoyed, and must admit was clueless on, was the nutritional information for various types of game. I like Ted and Shemane's philosophy very much on food, why buy it when you can kill it? Wince on liberal weenies and animal huggers. You are standing in the way of my dinner! That's how it was done 200 years ago and should continue today and in the permanent future. Bang bang, sizzle sizzle, yum yum!!! Go Ted GO!!!
