Book Description

Three days ago, she was a wife, a mother, and very much alive... then the music called to her.

Marketing maven Claire has one goal for the Music Expo-- to land a few whales so that her boss will give her a badly needed raise. She puts on her game face and courts the industry's elite until her plans are derailed by hotness-in-high-heels.

Vampire Bette wants to find a human with untapped talents that she can mold and control. Using a haunted violin, she lures Claire in with her lilting song and bewitching smile. In that moment, Claire's life is unraveled and she finds herself with more than strange dreams and overdue bills to worry about. Much more.

To make matters worse, Claire is attracted to two unlikely people-- Bette and her hunky but pale associate, Gregor. Both can light Claire's fire, but is either of them the only one?

Unfortunately for Claire, life isn't all song lyrics and seduction. Tied to darkness by blood and power, Claire must harness her abilities if she has any hope of returning home to her daughter and regaining her former life.

Kill Me, the debut novel from author Alex Owens, is a quirky paranormal fantasy complete with music, magic, fangs and freaks. It is also the first in a planned series, with the second book due out by the Summer of 2013. Be forewarned, this is not your daughter's paranormal.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"When I started reading Kill me, the first in a trilogy by new author Alex Owens I expected the usual - Vampires, Intrigue, Drama and a little bit of Spice.  What I did not expect was the hilarious writing! A few pages into the book and it is crystal clear that Owen's strong suit is her ability to hit the funny bone every few sentences. "   ~Aditi, READioactive Book Blog

"Not your traditional, action-packed vampire tale, but it is one that's full of conflict - emotional, psychological, and (at times) extremely physical. Fast, fun, and . . . dare I say it, empowering . . . this is a wonderful story and one that will leave you anxious for more." ~Sally, Bending the Bookshelf Blog

"Overall, a fun, indulgent novel that will appeal to any woman who has struggled with being a working mom and wished for secret powers." ~ Christine, Ensconced in YA

"I made time for this book. I wanted to know what was going to happen next." ~ Mark, Masquerade Crew

From the Author

I adore paranormal novels and cut my reading teeth on Anne Rice's books back in the day. When I started this novel, it was because I'd never quite found the book I wanted to read-- one with a heroine more like myself. Not super-young and carefree, but a little more mature with a life and responsibilities.

A Vampire soccer-mom. A Witch with a crumbling marriage. A vulnerable Empath in a strip club.   Crazy, I know. But fabulous fun to craft. I hope you have as much fun reading Kill Me as I did writing it!

I won this novel from a member librarything giveaway in exchange for an honest review.

Kill Me is about Claire, a housewife turned professional mom, who is struggling to deal with her now dead beat husband as well as trying to make ends meet. She goes on a business trip that suddenly completely changes her life, and she meets the enigmatic Bette.

I had so much fun reading this book. I will put it out there that this is in no ways a book for kids or teens-- this is more for older women; and at times, I too thought I wasn't old enough for it! But this delightfully fun novel turns the stereotypical feeder of the night story on its head and indulges in more than just a little girl power. I blazed through it in one day and loved how it ended! I don't want to give away its secrets, but just believe me when I say it is well worth reading. Claire in particular is a very fun protagonist; what a kick-butt character.

I only wish that there was a scene (and maybe we will get it in future books) where her soon to be ex gets to see how awesome she is.

Overall, a fun, indulgent novel that will appeal to any woman who has struggled with being a working mom and wished for secret powers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Keepin' It Real! June 1, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Big girl vampire book. That's right. No character as a role model in this book, the story line is not sugar coated, and Kill Me is definitely not the kind of book my mom used to read!

Did I enjoy the story? Oh yeah. Ms Owens kept things gritty and mostly real. A nice change in a genre that's downplayed the heartless, dangerous, selfish side of the vampire culture. Will the idea flow in future novels? Maybe. I'm definitely intrigued...and I'll read the next novel in the Blood Chord series. Who wouldn't want to see every day Jane survive, adapt and thrive?

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting start to a new series. May 13, 2012

KILL ME is a fast and enjoyable read written in first person from Claire's perspective. Her goal at this conference is to sign up lots of clients and then go home to her daughter and dead beat husband. That is until she met Bette. Then her world gets turned sideways.

Ms. Owens has done a wonderful job with her characters. It is all too easy emphasize with Claire and her worries about paying her bills. Bette is a mixture of sultriness and feminine softness. And the men that she meets are hot and well developed. As busy and fast paced as this story is, it is most definitely the characters that make this tale so enjoyable.

I did find a few editing errors when I was reading and one did pull me out of the story for a minute. But overall, they didn't detract from my enjoyment of the story.

I do recommend this book to vampire lovers looking for something different.

I rate this book a 3.3.

**I received this book at no charge in exchange for a fair and honest review. No monies have or will exchange hands.

More About the Author

Alex Owens is a woman with little free time, which means she stays up all hours of the night putting pen to paper. By day she's June Cleaver in jeans, and by night she writes. Somewhere in the middle of all that she finds time to tend 'dem babies, fry up the bacon and curl up with a good book (or ten), much to the chagrin of her family. She's currently at work on her Blood Chord Series, with book one just released and book two due out in early Spring 2013!
