4.0 out of 5 stars A reproducible study guide for Harper Lee's classic novel, May 5, 2002
This review is from: To Kill a Mockingbird (Novel-Ties) (Paperback)
This is a reproducible 9-12 study guide of instructional material for teachers doing a unit on Harper Lee's classical novel "To Kill a Mockingbird." This guide is written in a chapter-by-chapter format and contains a synopsis, pre-reading activities, vocabulary and comprehension exercises, as well as extension activities to be used as follow-up to the novel. The idea is that when students receive the novel they also get a folder containing all of the duplicated worksheets. Depending upon the amount of time allotted to the novel in the classroom, students can get through "To King a Mockingbird" and the accompanying lessons in two to four weeks.

Pre-reading activities and discussion questions including social study connections, such as getting background information on Jim Crow laws and inviting a lawyer to class, and cooperative learning activities involving group discussions. The material for Chapter 1 of the novel includes vocabulary terms, questions for discussion, exercises on the literary devices of exposition and point of view, and a writing activity on a person's reputation. These are basic exercises, that will certainly direct students to not only a better understanding of the novel's dynamic but also a greater appreciation of why it has remained so popular for so long.

Even if teachers do not use everything in this study guide, they can certainly find some worthwhile ideas, such as the use of a Venn Diagram to show the similarities and differences between the Cunningham family and the Ewell family. If you do not have the time to come up with a lot of exercises for this novel or are looking for some helpful suggestions, then this study guide can be of help to you in your classroom. There are dozens of "Novel-Ties Study Guides" each for Levels 4, 5, 6, 7-8, and 9-12.
