BRUTAL TRUTH - Dead Smart

Biography

It is doubtful the most extreme end of the musical spectrum has ever possessed such a transfixing dichotomy as BRUTAL TRUTH. The band progressed with boundless enthusiasm through the primal fury of traditional grindcore and hardcore punk. They attacked suffocating city life on the edge of the 21st century and its media noise overload with the bare-knuckled forcefulness of passion, conviction and a… Read more in Amazon's Brutal Truth Store

3.0 out of 5 stars different step for these grinders, March 16, 2000

This review is from: Kill Trend Suicide (Audio CD)
"KILL TREND SUICIDE" is an odd record to review. While it was released by one of the best, no, THE best grindcore gods, it doesn't sound like anything else they have done. This recording was rushed, as the delays from their last release were quite lengthy, resulting in the somewhat "thin" grindcore sound and the displaced baboon shrieks, grunts and groans from Kevin Sharp. The guitars from gurn are slick and blazingly fast, and Danny's bass rumbles and churns from behind. While all of this complements each other, one must not forget Rich Hoak's insane drumming; it sounds like he has a double bass setup, but it's only a single. Wow. Anyway, with all of this, you might ask yourself why the lower rating? Well, after the third song, some noises start to sound a bit samey. And this is coming from a diehard Brutal Truth fan. I would not recommend this for someone who is looking to get into BT. I would suggest "SOunds of the Animal Kingdom" and "Need to Control" which are both staples of grindcore. With the mixing elements of different types of music on this EP (grind, thrash, techno, even black), it may sound like a plethora of goodies for the ear. Maybe. But it takes a mighty talented one to sort it ALL out and enjoy and respect EVERYTHING. Like I said, start with "Sounds" or "Need" if you want to dip your toes into Brutal Truth, but if you want something a little off center from what grindcore is considered to be, take a stab at this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Different but Killer!, June 8, 2009
This review is from: Kill Trend Suicide (Audio CD)
Been a Brutal Truth fan for quite some time now (mid 90s), the only reason im writing this review now - here in 09 - is because im new to amazon. That being said, I think this is one of BTs best efforts. Every song is rock solid and there are some quite unique and unexpected changes in some of the arrangements. There is a special connection with Kevin Sharps vocals and Richs "falling off of the stool" drumming style which leads to some cool spastic tempo tangents. I just wish there were more tracks is my only minor complaint. One doesn't neccessarily need to be a grindcore fan to appreciate this album. Some of the songs have kind of a hard groove to them. Great (but short) album!

4.0 out of 5 stars An essential album for fans of Brutal Truth, December 10, 2004
This review is from: Kill Trend Suicide (Audio CD)
I only recently 'discovered' this band, long after they broke up. I heard 'Need to Control' then quickly went for all the others. 'Kill Trend Suicide'is the last one I heard, and it marked a real change in sound from the first two with Earache records, going for a more stripped down grind approach.

It gets a lot of bad press for poor production, but I don't share this view; yes, it is murkier and more chaotic than the rest, but it's right for the songs here. It almost sounds live to me, and you can hear the first steps in this first album with Relapse towards their classic last album, 'sounds of the animal kingdom'.

I agree with the previous reviewer's comments on what to go for first if you are new to Brutal Truth, but don't miss this one out once you're into them;it is an essential piece of the evolution of this fine band.
