Book Description

The Heart of a Beast

The kulkaris of the Valley of Titans are known for their ferocity. They’re reviled and feared for their ruthless destruction of ranches and villages held by the Valkyon Federation.

Moorg is not an ordinary kulkari. His heart doesn’t thrill to battle, and his lack of fighting prowess has earned him the scorn of his brothers. He knows he doesn’t belong, but life among his fierce tribespeople is all he’s ever known. He doesn’t even know what a friend is until he finds one.

Lakhia is a human child, raised to fear the vicious killers who have become the scourge of her valley. She knows that all kulkaris are murderous beasts...until she meets Moorg.

When the kulkaris plan to burn Lakhia’s father’s ranch, it’s up to Moorg to decide where his loyalties lie, for to be a hero to Lakhia means being a traitor to his own kind.

Set in the world of the next-generation online roleplaying game TERA™, “Killer” explores the possibility of finding understanding and love where there was only terror and hate.

This novelette of courage and friendship by Jessie McKenna is a great way for readers to experience the world of TERA.

4.0 out of 5 stars A bitter-sweet story for a growing world March 22, 2012

I had the pleasure of reading this short story just this morning and I'm happy to leave a positive review. Set in the new gaming world of TERA, this is a sweet, sad, episode in the lives of two young characters--of two enemy species--who become friends. I have a feeling that these two characters will continue to grow and mature as the world itself develops. My young daughter loved this story and identified with both the characters, which is unsurprising, since she - like the girl in the story itself - loves monsters. A nice instalment, and recommended for YA readers.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good hour or so of reading. April 27, 2012

I went into this short story expecting it to be terrible since I bought it at the same time as the first short story released which was poorly written in my opinion. This story was leaps and bounds better. The story is pretty generic, but it's good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Odd and sweet May 16, 2013

This short story provides a new perspective from one that is outcast due to his monstrous ancestors' history. I first found it extremely bizarre that a "terrible brute" of his caliber developed feelings for a little girl but soon saw their relationship as friendly rather than the former. Delightfully written with a melancholy ending.

3.0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming, but... May 3, 2012

Yeah, this little story was intersting. Yeah, it was interesting to get a little insight of one of the enemies in TERA, their culture and beliefs. But because of some of the black-and-white natures of the game, it's difficult to see something like this happening. Pretty much the only thing that got me is when I ran into one of the characters in the game.
