5.0 out of 5 stars Make the Civil War come alive
At a recent Civil War Roundtable a panalist argued that KILLER ANGEL is the best book ever written about the Civil War. The argument didn't go over well with me because I had started to read the book several years ago and just couldn't get into it. However, the recorded version makes the story come alive. 3.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book. Flawed narrator.
This is a wonderful book to read but a terrible audio book to listen to. The narrator is so affected and languid sounding that it drains the energy from the novel. I could not have imagined anything taking away from the action of this book but the narrator's voice is so slow and languid that it's annoying. Almost sounds comical at times. At a recent Civil War Roundtable a panalist argued that KILLER ANGEL is the best book ever written about the Civil War. The argument didn't go over well with me because I had started to read the book several years ago and just couldn't get into it. However, the recorded version makes the story come alive. The narrator voice brings the emotions of the battle field to life. The recorded version has encouraged me to tackle the hard copy.

I would highly recommend this recording for the Civil War devotee and those who have little knowledge of the war! It works for all listeners.

5.0 out of 5 stars Third time's the charm, May 25, 2011

Had the opportunity to read this twice before (I was hooked the first time!) With other good books piling up, figured the best way to "review" Killer Angels was to listen to it on tape while driving on business. Was not disappointed. Previous comments about the READER had given me some misgivings. And yes, perhaps Lionel Barrymore could have been a wee bit better.....but the reading was top notch and faithful to the story.
Noticed just a couple a areas where the story dragged just a bit; this was not apparent to me when I was actually reading the novel. Nevertheless, the entire presentation was a great experience, from the prologue to the epilogue.
HIGHLY RECCOMMEND this book, regardless of the format. And after you've read it maybe you'll be like me, and visit both Gettysburg and the Maine home and burial site of Joshua Chamberlain.

The book obviously gets 5 stars but I was pleased with this audio version we bought to listen to on the ride to and around Gettysburg. I was a little iffy about the reader at first but on the whole I thought he did a good job of injecting his performance into a story I had read myself many times.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book. Flawed narrator., October 14, 2006
This review is from: The Killer Angels (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful book to read but a terrible audio book to listen to. The narrator is so affected and languid sounding that it drains the energy from the novel. I could not have imagined anything taking away from the action of this book but the narrator's voice is so slow and languid that it's annoying. Almost sounds comical at times. I can only guess that they wanted it to sound genuinely "Southern" but I come from Texas and never heard a southern accent like that, except for Blanche DuBois. Really too bad because it's a wonderful book.
