Best Most in depth fighting game PERIOD,
By A Customer
This review is from: Killer Instinct Gold (Game Cartridge)
OK, as you may have heard, this game is for advanced gamers. But, I must say...my dad paid $... for this game, and it is well worth it.This game is DEEP! Fans of the original Killer Instinct or Killer Instinct 2, or even of a fighting game that ACTUALLY has strategy to it, this is THE game to have. I must say it is at least 10 times as good as Mortal Kombat (such a simple fighting game). This excludes street fighter of course, but this game is much deeper than street fighter ever was (or probably ever will be). The only problem with this game is non-mono sound. While the difference between stereo and mono is hardly noticeable, it is nice to hear the great tracks in their fullest sound. Of course, even monaurally, the songs are awesome. Let's recap. 10 characters + 1 hidden boss character, 90 fps, amazing interactive 3D environments, knocking off of the stage, no mercies and huge ultra combos, many special unlockable options, ONE MILLION PLUS combos, special maneuvers to maximize combos, super moves, combo/ultra breakers, new team and training modes, practice mode, new cool colors, saving all of your awesome achievements, and very easy to master difficulty levels to work your way up to a true KI Gold master. This game combines the greatest elements to make the greatest fighting game: speed, action, novice to pro, simple to strategic, a few minutes of fun to a gameday of superb fighting, variety, great environments....this game has it all. A fighting fan without this game is not a fighting fan at all.

Fight on!,

Lately I've been grabbing old N64 games to play on residence - my brother and sister wanted the Gamecube at home, so I began hunting through video game stores for any N64 gems worth filling out my collection with. I'd avoided KI Gold on its initial release because it got mixed reviews and was horribly expensive (remember those first gen N64 games? Exactly.), but since I owned every other Rareware game, I decided to grab it. After grinding the controllers to a bloody pulp in all-out tournaments with my roommates, I'm left wondering why Rare never followed with a KI3.
The fighting engine in KI Gold is completely insane. It's ridiculously fast, brutal, and fully animated. KI really puts other N64 fighters (particularly the Mortal Kombat series) to shame. The engine has some pre-programmed combos and also allows you to invent your own. I'll admit it's not as deep as Street Fighter - mindless button mashing can create some intense crowd-pleasing combos whereas Street Fighter is more skill-based - but you'll need all the help you can to survive. There are a slew of one-hit finishing moves that can instantly deplete your second energy bar, and the AI isn't shy about pulling these on you every chance it gets. What's also interesting is that while the fighting is strictly 2D, the arenas are full 3D, and certain moves such as throws will change your character positions in that space. The graphics are excellent - it's a little odd at first seeing 2D sprites on a 3D arenea, but you get accustomed to it. The soundtrack would've been worth releasing another CD for (like they did with the first game), and the controls are sharp. If you're like me and still go for a little retro gaming, Killer Instinct Gold is probably the best fighter you can get for the N64.

Almost flawless, but not quite,
By A Customer
This review is from: Killer Instinct Gold (Game Cartridge)
I got Killer Instinct Gold for Christmas a few years ago and it's still fun to play. It is almost a perfect port from the arcade versions to the Nintendo 64 console. The graphics are awesome and the fighting action is fast and fluid. The music goes perfect with the levels while the sound isn't bad either. The control is also top notch. You can use either the control pad or the joystick. There are also a few fatalities and you can knock your opponent off of almost every level. Some of them are especially cool. For example, in T.J. Combo's stage you can knock your opponent on the train track and the train will run over them. The combos can't be much better and the selection of characters is also good. There are many codes and secrets to find in the game that will keep the replay value good throughout the years. Killer Instinct Gold is a great fighting game, but it's not completely flawless. Some of the graphics such as the mountains look like they're not finished and to see the real ending, you have to beat the game on the Master level and it's almost impossible. But other than that, this game is great. Anybody who likes fighting games should pick this one up today.

This game is awesome. Im the kind of gamer who likes classic N64 games, and this is a superb masterpiece to my collection. This one has it all: Graphics, sound, and most importantly, great gameplay. Fighting fans definetly add this one to your collection. Its an oldie but a goodie.

Killer Game,

This is the best fighting game ever. There are loads of characters to choose from all with loads of special moves. The best thing about the game are the ultra combo's with hits in excess of 80 hits. The graphics look like they are straight from the arcade and the game play in two player mode has the greatest appeal than i have seen in any other game

Killer Instinct Gold,

Let's get it out there first, KILLER INSTINCT GOLD is an advanced fighting game. Beginning gamers won't be able to do the combo system. Don't get me wrong, it's fun to play even if you're not very good, but I still think that by not being able to pull off the combo system and new fatality system, than you really miss out on the core principals of this game and that is the combos. Now if you are an advanced gamer, than this is easily for you! KI Gold does not disappoint in any way, shape or form. From it's near flawless animation and graphics, to it's gameplay and replay value, it's very hard to put this one down. Along with some new characters (Maya, Kim Wu, Tusk and end boss Gargos) and returning characters Jago, Orchid, TJ Combo, Fulgore, Saberwolf, Glacius and Spinal, you're sure to find some completely hardcore fights and of course, new combos, new moves and newly added supermoves. Also, no longer are fatalities done while your opponent is dying, now they are done during combos (Ultimate Combos). It's a great, new and challenging system. The down points, for me at least, was that my main guy Cinder is gone. But vast improvements to the returning cast highly makes up for that. Check out KI GOLD!

Orchid and her Legs,
By A Customer
This review is from: Killer Instinct Gold (Game Cartridge)
This game rocks for several resons, first if you can't play worth a lick, then you could choose Glacius, who in turn can beat anyones booty. My favorite character is of course Orchid because homegirl can whup tail with them legs....whoo. OFF THE FREAKING HOOK...and that combo where she morphs into a tiger on fire....no beating that, ya dig? OFF THE HOOK! No game on 64 could ever beat this game.

One of the "World's Perfect 2-D Fighter's",
By
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Killer Instinct Gold (Game Cartridge)
Back when 2-D fighter's were a dime a dozen, there were only a select few that stood out in both the arcades and the home consoles and "KI" in my opinion was at the very TOP of that list amongst other brawlers such as "Street Fighter- Alpha"/"The King of Fighter's"/"Samuri Showdown" and of course the insane fighting mechanics of "Guilty Gear".
"KI" I.M.O was one of the "Elite" games of this genre due to the fact that you can't just press buttons and expect to beat the came, it's much more than that and takes skill, patience, quick hand-eye coordination and sometimes split-second timing just to perform some of the most basic moves such as blocking/countering and so forth. Don't let the dated graphics turn you away from this one, it's a "TRUE GEM" and rightfully belongs in any Fight fan's collection, if you can find a copy. I searched the WEB and when i did find a copy ( which was rarely) the price tag was very steep,so if Amazon has any left- BUY A COPY !!! Whether it's 2008 or 2020 K.I. has stood the test of time and will alway's be as innovative as ever-a classic in it's own right. Imagine this redone right on the XBOX 360 OR PS3?? -----holynight1

Music, effects, combos fun characters,
By Jeff Johnson "Jeff Johnson" (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Killer Instinct Gold (Game Cartridge)
Silicon graphics and the usual play control equal an easy to learn 3D fighting game. The thing that makes this game really unique are the killer combinations of moves, and the fact that there are tons of special moves for each character, but then when you start doing a combination of moves there are even more special moves! The fighting arenas are visually astounding, especially Spinal's ship. There is even cool fighting music to keep up with the pace of the fight. Speaking of the pace, there are 100s of options, including the speed of the fight, disabling certain moves, damage, and anything you can imagine. Another great part about this game is that there is an actual scale of challenge, which makes it anywhere from easy for a beginner - to difficult for a master gamer. The only disappointing thing is that the original fighters are better than the four new ones.
