4.0 out of 5 stars A singer-songwriter with a great voice, fine backup band and a GREAT bonus track!, August 5, 2010
This review is from: The Killer in Me (Audio CD)
I've seen Amy Speace perform at folk festivals and in her home base of Nashville and love her live performances. This album captures her voice and words (she wrote or co-wrote all the songs here) but she shares the sound with her band - the Tearjerks. This is usually good - on songs like the title track and "This Love" which has a powerful guitar solo by album producer James Mastro - but sometimes Mastro's production overpowers Speace's voice and her acoustic guitar playing. There's no denying that Speace can emote when needed. On "Dirty Little Secret" she is listed in the liner notes as performing "vocals and angst". But on a song like "Would I Lie" , the drummer - Jagoda - provides such a train moving fast beat that it detracts from Speace's vocals. There are some wonderful songs - and Ian Hunter makes a guest appearance here on vocals, dueting with Speace - but a few tracks don't let her shine through.

The hidden gem on this album - and thankfully not actually "hidden" (though there is a 20-second silent track before it begins is the last song, "The Weight of the World". Here we get just Speace and her acoustic guitar on a song with passionate lyrics and a voice to match. While some may like the "rockin'" "guitar heavy" numbers that preceded it, I would certainly love a whole album of Speace and her acoustic with songs like this delight which ends the album.

I was introduced to Speace via XM Radio's The Village, their folk channel and impressed enough to come right to Amazon to find the CD.

What impressed me first was the CD's opener, "Dog Days," but I've got to say that the whole CD is good. There's a bit more folk rock sentiment than I'm used to hearing on The Village here, but it's not so instrumented you cannot hear the lyrics.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Album by a Great Singer, November 22, 2009

This review is from: The Killer in Me (Audio CD)
Amy Speace's "The Killer in Me" is an album that features her awesome voice and her solid songwriting. Since I have discovered her music I have marveled at how Amy can switch from a pop/rock sound to a folk sound to a country sound. This is one of the most versatile singers I've ever heard. Her music is original and is a breathe of fresh air compared to most mainstream music out there today.
