Where do you start with a movie like "Killer Party"? Well we have three "gorgeous" babes going through hell night to join a sorority. When I sat down to watch "Killer Party", I was thinking that I was in for another low budget 80s slasher flick with lots of cheese. In the beginning, 80s cheese was all over the place and I almost turned it off because the beginning was so lame with that terrible video, etc. But, I am glad that I didn't because it did get a lot better as the movie progressed, but in the...

4.0 out of 5 stars Party Til You Drop Dead, November 23, 2011
This review is from: Killer Party (DVD)
Where do you start with a movie like "Killer Party"? Well we have three "gorgeous" babes going through hell night to join a sorority. A whole bunch of horny guys dump bees in the sorority's back yard as a joke. Where, of course, a bunch of girls are naked in the outside hot tub during said bee attack. Their house mother gets talked into letting the girls have a hazing party in a forbidden frat house. When she goes there to make sure the place is safe, she first stops at a handy grave in the front yard to explain to `Allan' why she's letting the girls use the house (who `Allan' is has not yet been explained). She tells him that it was all an accident and it's time for him to just let it go. Allan doesn't answer her, since he's dead. Or is he? As she is nailing down a loose banister on the stairway, a mysterious figure appears before her, brandishing what looks like a tire iron, she turns, asks "What are you doing here?" and this person answers her by striking her dead.

Back at the sorority, the three pledges go through a hazing (and there are some very nice set pieces here, watch for `em), and are accepted into the sorority. One of the pledges is really good at special effects and she is told that the only reason that she was accepted was that skill. IN fact they want her to stage a traditional April Fools party that the sorority is hosting for a fraternity. Twenty-two years ago, the boy in the grave ("Allan") was killed at one of those parties by what everyone carefully refers to as an "accident." The girls talk about strange disappearances while they begin to set up the old house for the party, and more strange things happen. Will the youngsters figure out what's going on and who is doing it before they are all horribly killed?

"Killer Party" is grade-A 80's cheese and I loved every minute of it. From the campy opening music video number to the pink hair and the big glasses, this film is a loving tribute to everything that was wrong about the 80's. It's just plain fun and a hell of a good time. That's not everything here works. The film goes from slasher to supernatural possession thriller about 2/3's of the way through and it makes for an interesting ending that doesn't seem to fit the rest of the film. Nonetheless, you could do a lot worse than this little slice of sleaze Heaven. The slasher gods shine down nicely on this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars 80's Gem, December 11, 2007
This review is from: Killer Party [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I just bought a barebones dvd of Killer Party. It's as perfect as I remembered it as a seven year old.
It has earned its place among the very coolest of 80's Horror.

I love the ending...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Slasher That is rarely seen, June 9, 2002

This movie is about college kids having a party at a frat house that is supposedly haunted by a college kid who died there twenty years before. But as usual the party goes on and chaos begins as the sprit of the dead takes over a girl and begins killing everyone one by one. Lots blood, gore, fun and quite a film for family entertainment. Hopefully one day this slasher that is out-of-print will be reissued in DVD format for horror fans to rediscover....

2.0 out of 5 stars 1.99 STARS: Not a bad idea but poor execution., October 8, 2005

When I sat down to watch "Killer Party", I was thinking that I was in for another low budget 80s slasher flick with lots of cheese. In the beginning, 80s cheese was all over the place and I almost turned it off because the beginning was so lame with that terrible video, etc. But, I am glad that I didn't because it did get a lot better as the movie progressed, but in the end, "Killer Party" is still a turkey of a movie.

"Killer Party" is basically about three young women who are pledging a sorority and one of the sorority sisters named Veronica really gives them a hard time. Also, there is this house that is supposed to be haunted by the ghost of some young man who was tragically killed during some kind of prank. Sound familiar? Well, there are a lot of slasher movies out there about fraternities and sororities, especially from the 80s. However, "Killer Party" is different from the rest, and it would be unjust to characterize this movie strictly as an ordinary 80s slasher.

Indeed, there is no doubt that the makers of "Killer Party" were looking for something different...they were looking to break away from the norm and trangress the unwritten rules about horror movies. I don't ruin it, but suffice it to say, "Killer Party" does a decent job of using classic misdirection to fool the viewer into making the mistake of classifying this movie as a formulaic slasher flick. This movie actually deals with the supernatural and does a good job with it towards the end.

Unfortunately, the problems with "Killer Party" are many. First, the acting in this movie is just AWFUL and this really hurts the effectiveness of this flick as a horror movie. How can one take the horror movie seriously when the actors and actresses are so pathetic and inept in their attempt to portray horrified/scared characters as the scenes require. Also, the kills aren't very impressive and the movie is rather poorly made indicative of an extremely low budget production. Also, the tired cliche setting and sorority/fraternity scene coupled with the bad acting and low budget production hinders the production of horror in any sophisticated and seasoned horror movie audience.

Inevitably, "Killer Party" generates more of an unintentional comedy-like atmosphere which clearly overshadows the effectiveness of the horror the creators of this film were trying to produce in the audience...this is a shame because there was some potential here as the plot is pretty good notwithstanding the cliche ridden setting and lame characters. There are some twists in the end and the movie generates some suspense, but not enough to overcome its bad points to be considered a good horror movie.

Despite the surprise and shock value "Killer Party" is able to produce in the audience, the movie still comes off as mostly a laughingstock if anything else. I would say that the idea behind "Killer Party" was intriguing, but the movie was poorly executed. Overall, "Killer Party" is a slightly below average TWO STAR flick which was premised around a good idea but poorly executed (which is in the C- range on my grading scale). In conclusion, "Killer Party" is clearly flawed to the extent that the movie unintentionally produces more laughs than the intended horror and shock value the creators of this flick were obviously looking to instill in the viewer.

As a final note, if you like "Killer Party", I would also recommend "Night of the Demons", which is clearly executed much better and is definitely of the same fabric as the inferior "Killer Party". Still, both are 80s movies which produce a lot of unintentional comedy, but at least "Night of the Demons" has better acting and production values.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Kind Of Party!, July 24, 2010

This review is from: Killer Party [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Killer Party is a real guilty pleasure of mine. It's nostalgic for me because I saw it several years ago on tv, and got a real laugh out of the movie. It's a lot like Slumber Party Massacre 2 or Cheerleader Camp, where's there's far more cheese and laughs than gore or scares. If you like those two movies, you should like this one. It's definately in the same vein.
I also must add that Killer Party is so derivative (the final ten minutes is so much like The Evil Dead and Night of the Demons, while everything before it is a copycat of The House on Sorority Row), yet so unique at the same time. You'll have to watch the movie to know what I mean. Hopefully, this movie will get a dvd release. I can see it being released by either Camp Motion Pictures or Lionsgate. Let's hope it happens.

This is not a good horror movie. It is a bit funny though, which is why I give it two stars. The acting is hilarious. It is not scary and the premise is nothing new. A bunch of college kids having a party and people die.

C'mon guys!
A film like this doesn't need a 500+ word review. You can't do that to a film of this nature. 80's teen horror set in a sort of sorrority/fraternity setting. Been there. Done That. Except this one opens with the cheesiest music video known to man that takes place in the annals of a drive-in snack bar and gets cheesier from there. You either love it or hate it, there's no grey area. I have to admit, the possessed chick during the final 20 minutes did spook me a litte. Get this one if you miss the old 80s drive in movies...you'll thank me later for it. LOL
