Book Description

From New York Times & USA Today bestselling author, Katie Reus, a sexy romantic suspense novella...

Journalist Eve Newman stumbles across the murder of a prominent member of her west Texas town and finds herself the target of a shadowy killer. When the body goes missing and the police don’t believe she saw it happen, she turns to the only man in town she can trust; her deceased brother’s best friend.

Former Marine, Macklin Quinn, has been half in love with Eve since they were kids, but he’s always considered her off-limits. When she turns to him for help he can’t send her away. Within twenty-four hours it’s clear she’s in trouble and someone wants her dead. Mac will do everything in his power to keep the feisty journalist alive and help her bring down the killer. And if they can stay alive long enough, he’ll do whatever it takes to convince her they’re meant to be together.

From the Inside Flap

Mac paused as he ran a towel over his damp hair. Then he heard the sound again. Someone was banging on his front door. Insistently. He glanced at the watch he'd left on his bathroom counter. It was almost ten. Normally he'd be in bed by now and so would most of his men, but they'd had trouble with some of the cattle getting out after a section of one of his fences had been intentionally knocked down. By drug smugglers no doubt. They were getting worse in this area and he was fed up with it.

Without bothering to put on clothes, he headed toward the front door. That's when he heard the one voice that had the ability to make him go rock hard in seconds.

"Macklin Quinn, I know you're in there! You better open this door right now!" Eve's shouts were followed by three more bangs.

For such a petite woman she had a loud knock. Shaking his head, he jerked the door open.
"Damn it, Mac..." She trailed off as she stared at him. Unabashedly her eyes tracked down his bare chest to the damp towel hanging on his hips.

Her peaches and cream complexion often gave away her emotions and now was no different. Those dark eyes of hers flared with momentary interest as they reached the top of his towel. When her gaze landed on his growing erection, her cheeks tinged an adorable pink and she quickly looked up. "Uh...do you have company?"

"No." The only company he wanted was her. In his bed. But that wasn't going to happen. So why was she here?

She sighed and visibly relaxed. "I need a place to stay tonight."

Mac wouldn't mind accommodating her but he knew her well enough that she wasn't looking to jump into his bed. If only. He frowned as he took in her appearance. "What the hell happened to you, Eve?" The question came out harsher than he intended. Her hair was hidden by a dark cap and she wore all black, like some sort of cat burglar. Dirt smudges covered her face and...were those leaves sticking out of her collar?

She bit her bottom lip and eyed him nervously. "Aren't you going to let me in?"

Sighing because he couldn't say no to her, he stepped back. When he shut the door behind her, she wrung her hands in front of her stomach. "I did something stupid tonight but I'm not going to tell you what it is if you're going to give me a lecture."

Oh, shit. If the stubborn woman was actually admitting she'd done something stupid, he'd no doubt need a shot of whiskey.

About the Author

Katie Reus fell in love with romance at a young age thanks to books she pilfered from her mom's stash. Years later she loves reading romance almost as much as she loves writing it. However, she didn't always know she wanted to be a writer. After changing majors too many times, she finally graduated with a degree in psychology. She now spends her days writing dark paranormal romance and sexy romantic suspense.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast Paced Romantic Suspence May 13, 2011
By LeaF
Format:Kindle Edition
Investigative journalist Eve Newman follows an anonymous e-mail requesting a meeting the District Attorney's mansion for a good story. Eve is a gutsy and savvy reporter and is relentless with respect to following leads and reporting the truth. However, when she hears gunfire as she is approaching the area arranged for the rendezvous and discovers a man known for walking on the shady side of the law dead on the deck of mansion's pool. Eve finds herself fleeing for her life, the target of the man's assailants.

Eve eludes the bad guys and turns to the one man who she knows will help and protect her, Mac Quinn. Eve and Mac have known each other for many years as she was his best friend's kid sister. Mac has always been attracted to Eve but never actively pursued her out of respect for his friend. Katie Reus has created another strong, tough, intelligent and enticing character in this ex-military hero. Mac owns a ranch outside of town and when Eve turns up at his door frightened and in need of protection he cannot turn her away. Eve has a visceral distrust of the town's law enforcement for good reason and she flatly refuses to go to the police.

Killer Secrets is a fast paced, thrilling romantic suspense that is full of action scenes including a car chase, explosion, gun fire, kidnapping and murder as well as plenty of sexual tension. As it turns out Eve wants Mac as much as he wants her and as the danger moves closer, and near death experiences increase so does their need for each other. When they finally do get together it makes for a very intense sensual love scene.

2.0 out of 5 stars Didn't like it March 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Journalist Eve Newman is following an anonymous tip for a supposedly exiting story when she witnesses a murder. She runs away but is followed. Not knowing where else to turn to but her brother's best friend, she knocks at Macklin Quinn's door hoping that he will help her. Macklin, an ex-marine, does everything he can to help her. Not only is Eve his best friend's younger sister and the three of them nearly grew up together, but he's been secretly in love with her for as long as he has known her.

I know this was a novella and therefore limited in space, however this isn't an excuse for the insufficient development of the main characters and the complete lack of atmosphere between the two of them. Instead of letting the reader feel the growing attraction and tension between Eve and Mack, the author described the feelings in such a blunt way that the ambience was completely destroyed and the book was reduced to a report.

As far as the plot was concerned, there weren't any twist or turns, the motive behind the crime just ridiculous. What a pity!

This is a good book to read on a rainy day. The usual hot guy, cute girl. But it had a good story line and plot. It kept you hooked on "ok who is the bad guy?" It was good. Enjoy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love for a good friend. March 12, 2013
By Jamie l

I love this short story. I love A good dramatic/ romantic story how people come to terms that they really do have feelings for each other. Fascinating that it takes a little persuasion and near death experience to get it out of them. I will be looking forward to reading your other books. I can't get enough of them. Thank you.

4.0 out of 5 stars More Romance Than Suspense July 19, 2011
By Aarwin
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed this novella for a quick, interesting read. Investigative reporter Eve Newman was appropriately inquisitive and impulsive, barging in where angels fear to tred, and her love interest Mac was appropriately commitment shy, irresistable and protective of Eve, his best friend's younger sister. However, despite gunshots, car crashes and bombs, the mystery, suspense aspect of the novella was a bit trite and disappointing. Aside from the two main characters, the characters supporting the story were shallow outlines of people with no depth or development, and this includes the totally uninteresting killer. The only thing that made me like this story is the relationship between the two main characters, probably because they are the only characters we are allowed to get to know. Mac quickly wraps up the "bad guy" so he and Eve can get back to bed.
