Book Description

February 2, 2010
Robert Bruce Spahalski and Stephen Spahalski were identical twins. Same hair, same eyes, same thirst for blood. Stephen was the first brother to kill - by viciously bashing in storeowner Ronald Ripley's head with a hammer. Unlike Stephen, Robert didn't stop with just one victim. With the cord of an iron, Robert strangled prostitute Morraine Armstrong while having sex. With his bare hands, he choked his girlfriend Adrian Berger. He brutally bludgeoned to death businessman Charles Grande. Even his friend Vivian Irizarry didn't escape his lurid killing spree. Robert ultimately confessed to the four murders in vivid detail. But police suspected there were many more. The twins' twisted story became even more bizarre as the true nature of their sick psyches came to light. In these pages, Robert Spahalski reveals for the first time the horrific details of his life and crimes in a disturbing look at the inner workings of a homicidal mind...

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Rochester, New York experienced a plague of serial killers during the late 1980s and early 1990s, with at least three killers operating in the Edgerton section of the city. True crime writer Benson's latest hones in on one of them: Robert Bruce Spahalski. After his arrest, police found themselves with an unusual serial killer, in that his victims varied so much in terms of race, gender, and even method of death. Even more unique was the fact that Spahalski had an identical twin brother, Stephen, who was also a murderer. Given this wealth of macabre oddness and accounts of violence, one might expect a livelier book, but Benson's text reads like a police report with a few of the numbers filed off. The overall story of the twins is difficult to pick out of the mass of details, and the book frequently supplies extraneous information. END

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!, February 15, 2010

This review is from: Killer Twins (Paperback)
One of the best true-crimers I've read in a while. I used to think that the reason the FBI profilers so frequently struggled with new cases was that no matter how many categories they came up with, people were snowflakes and psychos all went psycho in their own way. But here's a book that makes the case that psychopathic behavior is preprogrammed in the genes. Identical twins who competed by doing crimes, ever-escalating crimes, until both separately became killers, and killed in an identical way. Must read for all law enforcement and criminologists, and a bit of a page-turner to boot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read!, February 16, 2010
This review is from: Killer Twins (Paperback)
A lot of Benson's books are courtroom dramas but not this one. This is a lot quicker paced with a lot more story, more of a saga, covering more than thirty years and two small cities in Upstate New York. There is a trial, but it's more of a footnote. The killers and the many victims are given careful attention, so that it's tearfully tragic when they inevitably come together. One of the killers really opened up and gives us a guided tour of a killer's mind. It isn't what this guy feels that is chilling, but what he doesn't feel. Images stick with you. I might read this again some day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, March 26, 2010

This review is from: Killer Twins (Paperback)
February 04, 2010: When Stephen Spahalski was released from prison in 2009, the Elmira, NY community was all abuzz about what he and his brother Robert "Bruce", had done. In a search, I found out this book was coming out. I wanted to read it, only to find out what was "true" and what was "rumor". I was stunned.
Mr. Benson truly did his homework. From the Spahalski's childhood, their drug fueled crime sprees and eventual murders, to the frustration and eventual relief of law enforcement in the solving of the murders, it's all there. Your heart breaks for the victim's families, and you get angry when the confessions come. There are a few graphic pictures in this book for the Ripley murder.
If you enjoy reading "true crime" books, this is one to pick up. Once you start reading, you won't want to put the book down until you are done.
