Book Description

April 1, 2005
'Callum looked out over Reykjavik, its colourful dolls' houses snuggled together, their rooftops so sharp and precise against a blue-screen sky. He loved this daft capital, this gale blown toy town with whalebones under its flagstones...' But Callum Pope cannot escape the horrors of his past He has fled his native Glasgow to make a fresh start in Iceland with Birna Sveinsdottir, the pretty glaciologist who is slowly thawing his heart. He has moved in with Birna, her indomitable mother (who happens to believe in fairies) and her eleven-year-old daughter who refuses to believe in Callum. He tries hard to adjust to this new life among three generations of singular females, however the dark secret Callum is hiding is about to raise its malign head, threatening not only to destroy his relationship but also the life of a young girl...

1.0 out of 5 stars Nobody to like, nothing of interest, September 27, 2005
This review is from: Killers Guide to Iceland (Paperback)
The Killer's Guide to Iceland.

Everything is wrong with this book but what strikes the reader at once is how boring the heroine is. Her perky "I am a survivor" attitude is so annoying. She is constantly reminding her lover that Icelanders have survived volcanic eruptions, isolation and whatnot for hundreds of years. Her constant harping is so grinding on the nerves that being an icelandic woman myself I am convinced that had my foremothers been like that, my forefathers would surely have killed them. Thus ensuring the extinction of the race. I have always been certain that the mark of a true survivor lies in the fact that he is to busy surviving to talk about it much. Those that go on about their sickness and deseases don't have the gumption necessary to get up and do what it takes to beat the illness. Maybe somebody likes personalities like Birna Sveinsdóttir but I am certain that no one can love them. The same goes for other Icelanders that show up in this book. They are boring and uninteresting. As for the love affair between the two main characters it sounds stupid. What woman in her right mind would invite a man to live her house that didn't know her child at all? And as an Icelander I can assure all of you out there that the wise woman who knows her herbs is extinct in Iceland and an educated young woman here would not live in a shack.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Mystery, April 25, 2006
This review is from: Killers Guide to Iceland (Paperback)
While its portrayal of Icelanders may not be spot on, this book is a good one if you like a good, intelligent mystery.
