Editorial Reviews

Product Description

The "space" in this album's title may be open to conjecture, but there's no question that the material is killer, culled from Dickinson's half-century or so as a Southern musical sage. Though he remains better known as a producer (Alex Chilton, the Replacements), piano-playing sideman (Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan), or parent (sons Luther and Cody drive the North Mississippi All-Stars), any release by Dickinson under either of his own names--Jim or James Luther--is cause for celebration. This collection of Southern-fried nuggets is no exception. Though the kickoff "Texas Me" from the late, great Doug Sahm is the best-known of the obscurities revived by Dickinson, the rough-hewn passion with which he approaches (attacks?) the material makes them all sound like classics. The band features Dickinson's sons along with Texas saxophonist Johnny Reno, while the material ranges from ballads to boogie to bedrock spirituality. Only the barroom shuffle "Morning After the Night Before" was composed by Dickinson, but he makes the rest his own. --Don McLeese

It is almost 12 months since this album was released and as there have been no customer reviews posted I thought it time do rectify this.

If you don't know Dickinson's work you are missing out, if you are a music fan you certainly will have known albums that he has either played on or produced including Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Ry Cooder, The Replacements, Mick Thomas,Big Star and the North Mississippi Allstars. Sure there's lots more but you get the idea.

Jim loves all music and most types are included. Doug Sahm's Texas me kicks the record off in a country vain, then Dirty On Yo Mama rocks, Nature Boy, I Was A Champion and Elois are ballads whilst Lonely Nights and I Need You are Blues. My personal favourite, of the twelve tracks, is Mick Thomas' No, No Never Again that is worth the price of this record alone.

A crack band complementing Dickinson's keyboards and guitar, include his sons Luther and Cody of the North Mississippi All Stars, Paul Taylor, Jimbo Mathus and Chris Scruggs.

Do yourself a favour and check out Mr Dickinson a true American National Treasure.

I've had this since it came out, and haven't listened to it in years. Just did again & had to say its a fine album. Its better than free beer, more of a culmination of detritus that rolls down a hill and bowls the listeners over with its seeming easy going sublimity. Dinosaurs as well is a great left turn for s guy at the end of his life.
