Dear Reader:

Like most writers, I am an avid reader. I started light - Encyclopedia Brown, Trixie Belden, Nancy Drew - but by the time I was eleven, I'd discovered my mom's vast Agatha Christie and Ed McBain collections.

But two things happened on my way to becoming a mystery writer.

First, I discovered Stephen King.

As a thirteen-year-old book fanatic, I learned about page-turners early. I wrote Stephen King a fan letter after reading THE STAND and told him I wanted to be a writer when I grew up. He wrote back and told me: "If you want to be a writer, write." Which I took to mean, why wait until I grew up?

My problem? I never finished anything I started. As soon as I was well into the story and had figured out what was going to happen, I became bored and started a new project.

In high school, I became fascinated with true crime, and it wasn't until college that I started reading my mom's romance novels. They hadn't appealed to me as a teenager, but as a "mature" twenty-one year old, I found them entertaining.

Nora Roberts, Linda Howard, and others introduced me to contemporary novels that didn't involve murder, dismemberment, or deranged clowns living in the sewer.

Over the next decade, I built a career, married, had five kids, but never stopped reading--or writing.

I soon discovered a wonderful blend of suspense and romance with the romantic suspense novels of Tami Hoag, Kay Hooper and Lisa Gardner, and knew exactly what I wanted to write. I could take my mystery reader background, my fascination with true crime, and my desire for a happily ever after, and blend it into a romantic thriller.

I love romance because I want a happy ending. True love should win over adversity, if the hero and heroine are worthy. They need to earn it, because nothing achieved easily is truly appreciated. But I also love intense thrills and chills because they are physical--fear causes the entire body to react, heart pounding, head thumping, hands shaking.

DEAD HEAT, a Lucy Kincaid Thriller, is available now. Coming in July is the next Moreno & Hart Mystery, HIT AND RUN, co-written with Laura Griffin. Spring 2015 will have COMPULSION, the second book in the Max Revere series.

Thank you to all my readers. I appreciate your feedback and enthusiasm.

~ Allison Brennan

Allison Brennan is becoming a major talent in the suspense thriller genre. This book is no different and continues the stories of the Kincaids and their associates. I loved it.

Carina Kincaid's partner is Will Hooper, seven yrs ago Will was on the task force that caught and put Theodore Glenn in prison on death row. During the course of the investigation Will met and fell in love with Robin McKenna. She was one of the strippers at RJ's, Theodore glenn killed four other strippers who were her friends before he was caught. The last one was her roommate. Robin found her and has nightmares still, about falling over the body and sliding through the blood.

Will is a detective with the SFPD, he is divorced and has only had short affairs with other women since he lost Robin. Will lost her trust when he didn't believe her about Glenn. She never had an affair with him. Will finds that the news of Glenn's escape brings back all the feelings for Robin and when he sees her, he knows he will do everything he can to protect her and if he is lucky win her back into his arms.

Robin started stripping to pay for college, but every man she has dated has equated stripping with prostitution. She has lost all trust in men until she met Will. She opened her heart to him and thought he trusted her, but his questions about her relationship with Glenn destroyed what trust and love she had for him. Now Robin owns RJ's and it is an uptown night club. Very chic and understated the club has been rebuilt and refurnished while the area was undergoing a rejuvenation. However Robin still sleeps with the lights on.

When an unknown fault causes an earthquake at San Quention, Theodore takes the chance with many others and escapes.

This is my first time reading this author and while the book was okay I firmly believe Lisa Gardner and Karen Rose write a much better romantic thriller. I did not care much for Robin, the female main character. I didn't sympathize with her. I found her reaction to William juvenile. I didn't find it particulary suspenseful or "on the edge of my seat." I actually felt like skimming but since I hadn't read any of her work before I made myself read the entire book. There was nothing new here. Based on this book alone, I would not buy another book from Allison Brennan.

If you're familiar with the author and had read her previous 'Evil' trilogy, you'll be familiar with some of the characters in this one; Carina and Nick, Julia and Connor, and Dillon. I'm glad they were part of this book.

I had read Crystal's review on this one and had to pick it up. I'd read the previous trilogy and loved it, so this was pretty much a no-brainer. I'm glad I did.

Brennan has a way of creating fictional characters that seem absolutely real. I could feel Robin's fear, her courage, her motivation to be able to take care of herself. I could feel Will's determination to bring Glenn down.

And Glenn scared me - right out of the book, he scared me. I had never read a character as alive as this one; a sadistic sociopath with absolutely no remourse for what he's done or is about to do. His goal is to hurt Robin, a former stripper that saw Glenn for what he was and disliked him. He sees himself as above everyone else and hates Robin for choosing Will over him. He gave me the shivers!

And I agree with Crystal on the ending. Way too rushed! All of it squeezed into three chapters. Had it been stretched out a little with a little more action, this book would be a perfect 5-star. Excellent book! If you like thrillers, you'll love this book!

I couldn't put it down. Very tense and suspenseful. Great balance of suspense and romance. The only thing I had a bit of a problem with was that Will was not exactly one of my favorite characters Brennan has created and I wasn't that anxious to read his story. But he was just ok. I liked Robin better than him. By the last part of the book, their romance seemed more taken for granted and not as fresh anymore. Maybe it was just me.

I can't wait to read about Patrick. He was mentioned so often, I can't help but think his story is coming soon. I really liked the excerpt from her next book. I'm more excited for that one than Killing Fear.

Killing Fear kicks off the Prison Break trilogy. When an earthquake hits the San Francisco Bay Area, it literally brings down the walls of the infamous San Quentin state prison. Home to some of the most vile predators, it's no surprise when the inmates take their chance and flee. One man to escape is Theodore Glenn. Convicted 7 years ago of murdering four strippers, Theodore is determined to track down and kill every single person that betrayed him. Last on his list is Robin McKenna, the woman whose testimony he believes ultimately convicted him.

Robin McKenna has worked hard in the 7 years since she literally stumbled over her roommate's dead body. Working at RJ's strip club, Robin always believed that stripping was means to an end (you go, girl), not what she wanted to do for the rest of her life. The day Theodore Glenn came through RJ's doors is a day that she'd just as soon forget. Never quite liking him, but not knowing why, Robin kept her distance while her friends dated him one by one. Then stood by helpless as they were murdered. One by one. Absolutely certain that Glenn is the murderer, Robin takes the stand against him and helps put him away.

Now Theodore Glenn is out and Robin's former lover, Detective Will Cooper, is knocking on her door. Believing that she put their failed romance behind them, Robin is less than happy at the feelings Will can still invoke in her. As for Will, he is determined to protect Robin at all costs. It's only as he starts spending more and more time with her that Will realizes what an awful mistake he made all those years ago when he pushed Robin away.

Killing Fear is a page turner. From front to back, this book is action packed. Brennan did a bang-up job of writing a sociopathic character. For you readers who like your mystery along with a steamy romance, this one is a great one for you.
