Book Description

A simple girl from the Bible Belt terminates her pregnancy at a time when abortions are once again illegal. She is instantly caught up in a political firestorm, the target of opportunistic politicians, religious zealots and a ravenous press. As her lawyers flounder, trying to save her, she must reveal a mysterious power to save herself.

Set in modern day Missouri, this political thriller is timely and already well received by critics. As Publishers Weekly put it: "Whatever your stand on abortion, this well paced, attention-keeping novel focuses more on characters than arguments, while nevertheless making the issues involved clear and interesting."

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-paced thriller, timely topic September 26, 2012
By JoniVee
Format:Kindle Edition
Although I'm really critical of most fiction, I started this on a friend's Kindle and was drawn in from the start. Mandell did a fantastic job crafting and pacing this thriller and I loved the timely topic about what would happen if abortion was outlawed. I couldn't wait to see where it was going! It was torture when I had to stop reading because my friend was always using his Kindle, and yet over those weeks, the characters & vivid scenes were still alive in my mind. When I finally got the Kindle back I finished it in one sitting. All I can say is, awesome job! This is a great read & better than most novels out there. A real page-turner and an amazing bargain at $2.99.

5.0 out of 5 stars A riveting mystery novel with a message September 11, 2012

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I read Killing Innocence in two sittings. It was a riveting mystery that also had a message about the argument regarding abortion, and in particular, instances in which the aborted pregancy is the result of rape. The writing was very descriptive and the characters well developed. It flowed well and really told the story. I highly recommend it.

More About the Author

Author R.J. Mandell is a consumer attorney based in southern California where he lives with his wife and two children. A former journalist, Mr. Mandell has written numerous articles, features and works of fiction. Killing Innocence is his second novel.

Mandell is the grandson of Russian and Austro-Hungarian immigrants who were among the large wave of eastern Europeans who came through Ellis Island at the beginning of the 20th Century. Most of the family remaining behind perished during the Holocaust. His father was a Chicago native who served in the Pacific theater during World War II. His mother hailed from Massachusetts and later moved to New York, where she attended Brooklyn College and worked for the War Dept. Mr. Mandell describes his parents as "classic Kennedy liberals" who greatly influenced his notions of fair play and justice for the underdog.

Having grown up in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, Mandell later attended Humboldt State University in northern California, just as the Vietnam War was coming to an end. A few weeks after President Ford ended the draft and began withdrawing troops, Mr. Mandell received his draft lottery number - 7.

After he wrote an essay for his freshman English class, Mr. Mandell was recruited by HSU's English department, but opted to major in Journalism, "in order to please my mother." As a journalist, Mr. Mandell wrote for local and regional publications in southern California, and was a contributing writer for major publications such as the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner and the L.A. Times. He also wrote press releases and publicity pieces for Elektra-Asylum Records, the Blaine Group and the Harcort Jovanovich Press. After a stint in media sales for various magazines and broadcast media, he attended Southwestern University School of Law where he graduated at the top of his class in the rigorous SCALE program.

For the past quarter century, Mr. Mandell has represented consumers against big auto manufacturers, insurance companies and other large corporations. Through it all, he has maintained his passion for the written word, and for championing the rights of the little guy. He has written hundreds of articles, essays, song lyrics and poems, in addition to an unpublished novel, GOOD INJURIES. This more recent work, Killing Innocence, is grounded on the premise that those who seek power - be they fame seekers, politicians, or religious zealots - tend to exploit the issues that arouse passions, in this case abortion and choice.
