Clara Beresford is horrified when her teenage son, Rob, comes home one night covered in blood and hysterically claiming he's killed a man. While she's still trying to get the story, Rob bolts. But a bigger shock awaits when the police arrive to tell Clara that Rob is dead. Clara is understandably devastated. One of Rob's closest friends, Patrick, is also friends with former cop Naomi Blake, who retired from the force when she was blinded in an accident. Patrick knows that Alec, Naomi's policeman boyfriend, will probably be assigned to the case, and he knows if anyone can find answers, it's Alec. The police are anxious to close the case--a murder-suicide that will never come to trial. But Alec senses there's more to the two deaths than meets the eye, and he's right. Adams' initially slow-moving plot soon heats up, engaging the reader with its clever twists, intriguing characters, and shock ending.
