Book Description

June 10, 2003
Avery Delaney has tried to put the past far behind her. Abandoned by her rapacious, conniving mother when she was only three days old, Avery was raised by her grandmother and beloved aunt Carolyn. Then, when she was ten, she saw her grandmother murdered in cold blood, before Avery herself was shot and left for dead. Miraculously, she survived. The killer was soon caught, convicted, and is currently serving a life sentence in Florida. This traumatic experience propels Avery into a life of law and order. Her razor-sharp mind and ability to gather data and decipher evidence has made Avery an expert crime analyst for the FBI. But soon she will have to use every one of her skills on a case that hits painfully close to home. Avery's workaholic aunt, Carolyn Salvetti, is certain her (hopefully soon-to-be ex-) husband sent her the gold embossed reservation to the posh Utopia Spa in the mountains of Colorado. At first she is resistant, but then she figures it will be a welcome respite from the cutthroat advertising business, not to mention a networking extravaganza. Plus she persuades her niece to join her for the two weeks of luxury and decadence. But Carolyn never makes it to Utopia. Under false pretenses, she is taken to an isolated retreat by a handsome stranger with a dazzling smile, suave demeanor, and the darkest of motives. His name is Monk, a hired assassin. Now, with scant clues and fewer resources, Avery must track down and save Carolyn - and outmaneuver a brilliant killer who is part of an elaborate plot of madness and lethal vengeance.

From AudioFile

Having survived a harrowing childhood, Avery Delaney chooses a career in the FBI. When her aunt persuades Avery to join her for a week in a luxurious spa and then goes missing, Avery sets out to unravel a strange and terrifying set of events to save her one remaining relative. The personalities of Garwood's characters are clearly evoked in the voices Joyce Bean selects, including Avery's own childhood voice. Bean uses a good tempo to keep the first part of the story moving along and heightens the buildup of suspense and excitement. This overwritten novel is redeemed by her genuine, sincere performance. 2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as should be, November 26, 2003
I'm one of the biggest fan of Julie Garwood. I love all her books and have the whole collection or most of it. I do have to say that her historical stories are the best of them all, while I liked the change of HeartBreaker and was open to the idea of Julie's new style I was a bit disapointed by Mercy, and almost didn't make it to the end of KillJoy.
I think it is from far the only book that shouldn't be worth buying.

But try her historical books, they are amazing!

4.0 out of 5 stars The third in the FBI series..., October 25, 2002
This review is from: Killjoy (Audio Cassette)
Really 3.5 stars..."Killjoy" is the third installment in Julie Garwood's FBI series. In this story we are still looking for Monk (the hired assassin) who wrecked so much havoc in "Mercy", and it is Jean Paul who is chasing him.

The story is a bit farfetched and not as good as the first in the series "Heartbreaker". But, there is a lot of action as well as suspense in the story.

The story starts with the background about Avery and her crazy mother who has done nothing but abandon her and wreck havoc in everyone's life that she touches. She is pure evil.

Avery (heroine) is on the way to the spa to meet with her Aunt for some much needed R&R only to find out her Aunt is missing and all the reservations have been cancelled. Jean Paul is there looking for Monk as someone has used a credit card that they shouldn't have.

Avery's Aunt wakes up in a house that has 2 other women and they find out that it is wired to explode and there is no communication to the outside.

All these story lines come together to lead you on the chase through the mountains. It is an enjoyable listen and I do recommend that you listen tot eh unabridged version as I am sure you would get lost in the abridged.
