Matt Keating is a New York musician who has played in the city all his life, nowadays in Greenwich Village. "Killjoy," his third LP, is the next-best thing to hearing him live in a crowded Village pub. The title track opens the album with driving electric guitar, and Keating's distinct voice echoes through the album. The best songs are "Don't go the Road Alone," "By the Way," and "Emily," which was a hit on indie radio a few summers back. Keating's tunes range from the slow and pained to heavy guitar rock, and reflect his musical diversity. Sticking to the basics: guitar, drums, and bass, Keating lets you into his world of broken dreams and social commentary, and the result is a thoroughly satisfying album. Be sure to check out Keating's other albums, "Tell it to Yourself," and "Scaryarea." Seeing Keating live with or without his band makes for a good night in the city. Each show he plays is an awesome experience--I try to get down to the city whenever I can to see him play.

Singer-songwriter Matt Keating's latest album is a fine collection of dark songs with emotional twists. The subject matter of the lyrics range from a nervous breakdown in "The L Word" to the extreme right wing threat in "While We Fiddle". In between, relationships are put under the spotlight in what seems to be a very personal way.

Most of the tracks appear fairly raw, recorded on an 8-track machine in Keating's own basement. That doesn't take anything away from the album. On the contrary, it adds an earthiness that helps give gravitas and depth.

All in all, a good solid record, and if you like the idea of someone who could be the missing link between Leonard Cohen and Paul Westerberg, it might just be the record for you.
