Dry your wood and make double or triple your money., November 8, 2004
This review is from: Dry Kiln Operator's Manual (Agriculture handbook) (Paperback)
Drying wood is a science. The kiln has to be monitored for temperature and humidity or all your wood could be ruined.
This book contains drying schedules for Softwoods, Hardwoods and Imported woods. The drying schedules are also listed for board thickness since thinner boards dry faster.
This book shows the kiln measuring tools like dry and wet bulb thermometers, moisture meters and moisture scales and how to use them.
Kiln types mentioned are low temp (120F), Conventional Temp (180F), Elevated temp (211F) and High temp (above 212F).
Solar kiln and vacumn kilns are also mentioned.
In addition to drying, this book tells how to care for your logs so the ends won't split, how to stack your cut lumber so the air gets between the boards. How wide the air space is to be and spacers to use so you don't discolor your wood and how to store your lumber.
There is so much here I haven't even scratched the surface.
These authors also wrote a book called "Drying Hardwood Lumber" that is smaller (138 pages).
The Dry Kiln Operator's Manual is twice as large (274 pages) and includes the softwood and imported woods. This is the one to get first.
I don't see how someone drying wood could do without a book like this.
