Joe Robertson is a "travel experienced" industry executive, Chairman of The Robertson Corporation of Brownstown, Indiana. He and his wife, Virginia, are members of The Travelers' Century Club -- for those who have visited more than 100 countries -- as well as The Circumnavigators Club, which includes such travel authorities as James Michener, Jacques Cousteau, and General Douglas MacArthur.

The Robertsons have made three world-circling journeys and have visited over 100 places, plain and exotic, where the renowned "Kilroy" and his "buddies" have left his signature -- "Kilroy was Here" -- as they carved out the runways that facilitated the Allied victory in World War II. This work of "Kilroy" and his friends and the resulting postwar airline expansion and accessibility, fostered the development of the global commerce, in which The Robertson Corporation, and others like it, participate.

Throughout their many trips to more than 140 countries on six continents, Joe and Virginia Robertson have been finding and following "Kilroy's" roots. Virginia's notes and Joe's recollections of their travels were subsequently written up for publication in The Bedford Times-Mail and The Jackson County Banner. Joe Robertson states, "If someone should point out a place in the world where we haven't been -- and Kilroy has -- we'll probably go, even to the ends of the earth!"

Editorial Reviews

Review

Kilroy was that ubiquitous world traveler, a SCHMOE with a long nose protruding over a fence. He went wherever GIs were sent duirng World War II, and...yes, he's still around.

Joe Robertson was one of that Kilroy generation, an Indiana Hoosier from a long-established milling family. Kilroy got into Joe's life...and helped him develop his geography and travel sense, when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps.

...Joe, and Kilroy, were about to begin a life of travel.... Just about anyone over 50 and condemned to "chronic itchy foot syndrome" will find this book easy to read and enjoyable. -- GLENN M. BUSSET,MANHATTAN MERCURY, 21 February 1999

5.0 out of 5 stars An attention-grabbing, personal story of world travel, June 1, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: On Kilroy's Trail: A World of Travel (Paperback)
Here is a revealing story involving the ordinary people of "The Greatest Generation" as they followed the trail of World War II's most famous icon-Kilroy-to the far away places that became the action centers of the Twentieth Century. The first-time author knew many of the heroes like those in Saving Private Ryan. He was a neighbor, friend, and fellow soldier to many of those who went off to fight in places they knew only from school texts and to other places they never knew existed. American GIs went from city streets to fight as "Dog Faces" in unfamiliar, foreign, and fearsome fields. They went from driving tractors to driving tanks. They went from driving "Model A" Fords and flying kites to flying P-51 Fighters and B-17 flying Fortress Bombers in transition periods often measured in months. The author's adventures were focused on following the places where the signs, "Kilroy was here" marked the places-especially The Kilroy Fields-where Americans created air strips all over the world. Some of these airstrips were destined to become the great international airports of today's global community, while some were destined to become the lonely airstrips on by-passed South Pacific Islands or just sand runways in the Sahara. The travel adventure memoirs, which literally go from Tahiti to Timbuktu, provide the reader with an exciting and informative guide for visiting important places of business, politics, history, geography, and PLEASURE. This book is a fascinating read for anyone with intent in the background of the Brave Men and Adventure Addresses of the twentieth century. The book was written and published before the releases of Saving Private Ryan and The Greatest Generation, and is an example of good material available without the multi-million dollar hype and promotion of current best-sellers.
