1.0 out of 5 stars Very Disapointed
I was disapointed that the book was geared towards women. Mrs. Lyons husband is Gunther a very well established body builder. This book should have been geared towards both sexes. Why leave out half the population?

I am a huge fan of "The Biggest Loser" and I do like all the personal trainers - but I have always been drawn to Kim Lyons the most. She seems to be able to find that fine line between being motivational yet compassionate at the same time. I was excited to hear that she would be coming out with a book and anxious to see if her personality translates as well on paper as it does on television.

In "Your Body, Your Life" Kim Lyons manages to combine her gentle encouragement, common sense and knowledge into a book that will motivate even the most exercise-resistant! This is not simply an 'exercise book' - it is a lifestyle book. Starting off by listing the gear that you need before beginning as well as basic body information, Lyons begins to hammer together a winning combination of nutrition, exercise, positive thinking and journaling. She suggests setting get-real goals based around your current lifestyle and condition (she even gives you a series of tests to see how fit you are before you begin!).

The routines are set up in three levels and I can assure you that they are challenging but highly doable. I am a pretty fit person but I was feeling a good burn and sweating quickly from her regimes! The workouts are circuit based, which means you do a bunch of different exercises in a set routine and then repeat the circuit two or three times. Some of the routines involve plyometrics, which is a newer fad that involves a lot of jumping around. She reminds you to keep your knees soft to prevent injury but I found I needed to do this part on a heavily carpeted area - this made my joints much happier!

The nutrition part and meal plans are very easy to understand and delicious. She even recommends a 'cheat day' which of course, I love as I am a chocoholic!

The entire book, you feel as if Kim is right there, in her friendly and kind manner, rooting for you. There is a tone of non-judgement and self-love here that makes this book very recommended for people who want to work out but don't respond well to the yelling hard-nosed drill instructor type of fitness expert. I really enjoyed reading this and am feeling that Kim's workouts are giving my regular routine a good shakeup!

5.0 out of 5 stars She makes me feel as if she is explaining this in person to me!, June 14, 2008

This review is from: Kim Lyons' Your Body, Your Life: The 12-Week Program to Optimum Physical, Mental & Emotional Fitness (Paperback)
I really enjoyed reading this book. I'm a fan of "The Biggest Loser", so I wanted to read her thoughts on weight loss. The book is well-written and very easy to read. The book is divided into four subjects: It's All About You(Gear, Mind, Body, Goals; Journals; Fitness); Your Workout(Exercises); Your Nutrition (Food; Meal Planning); Your Future. I found the section on posture(Chapter 2) to be interesting. She goes into the different types of posture, which is helpful to me.....I have a swayback posture. She lists the muscles that I would need to work on to correct this bad posture. I haven't found too many authors who expound on this subject in a diet book. At the end of each chapter, she gives you "homework." Suggestions to help you prepare for this program, which ultimately is a lifestyle change. These suggestions are not mandatory, or hard to do. I am finding the "homework" is helping me to plan better and be well organized in my approach to beginning this program. This was lacking in my earlier attempts at losing weight. She is very big on planning and writing things down. There are three levels of weight training exercises, and there are some stretching moves. There are pictures of her performing each step to an exercise so that you do it correctly. I can't say that the information in this book is new, but it is the way that she presents it that makes the difference to me along with a few things that she does personally to motivate herself. I feel that the book is written as if she were sitting in a room explaining this in person to me. I felt her enthusiasm as I was reading. I've read other good diet books, but I can honestly say that I didn't feel any real enthusiasm coming from the authors. I think that this is a good book. She shows you how to safely go about losing weight, being healthy, and keeping the weight off for good. I highly recommend it.

This comprehensive book is one you'll refer to over and over. It's full of exercises you can do at home, grouped into workouts and arranged in increasing levels of difficulty as you advance. I've just been certified as a fitness instructor, and I'm using this book to develop workouts. If you work up to the advanced levels, you will really be in shape. A super book!!

I really enjoyed this book. I felt it gave me good information about nutrition and I really enjoyed the body types portion. I just wish the workouts were organized according to her schedule, but nonetheless I like Kim's no fuss approach. I think too many books just focus on us eyeballing every single calorie, let me tell you, I've been there and done that. I think trying to impart healthier food and exercising to improve your health is key, not so much focusing on losing weight. I am going to start her program this week, I will update everyone on my progress in three months!

5.0 out of 5 stars highly recommend, February 27, 2011
I used this book the summer of 2008 and had incredible results. I had already been working out and started with the advanced routine. The circuits kept my heart rate up and I lost the 10 lbs. that were so hard for me to shed before using Kim's workouts. It's easy to see how a beginner would benefit from this book, because the workouts are geared towards progression and give great instructions for beginners. The nutrition componet is extremely important for success and she goes into detail about proper nutrition. I would recommend this book and am buying it, as opposed to borrowing it from the library again, to get back into shape after the birth of my daughter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get Toned...at Home!, November 21, 2008
This review is from: Kim Lyons' Your Body, Your Life: The 12-Week Program to Optimum Physical, Mental & Emotional Fitness (Paperback)
I love this book! Kim offers fun and challenging circuit training exercise about 4-5X per week (including cardio 1 - 2X per week), that get progressively harder over the three - month program. Within about a couple weeks I was already seeing some serious muscle definition showing up in my shoulders and biceps, then abs and some nice firm glutes and quads. She tackles all areas of weight loss including psychological, nutritional and physical aspects. She encourages you to keep a journal and do her homework exercises to prepare you mentally. She speaks in a very supportive, non-judgemental tone and its almost like she's right there with you every step of the way.

The program is 3 months long, but you can use it for life by repeatedly doing the 3 month program. The other bonus is that you can do the circuit training in the comfort of your own home. All you need is a yoga/exercise mat, a stopwatch, and some light hand weights. Awesome for me because I easily find a reason not to go to the gym and I ususally end up paying my gym membership fees for nothing! But, with this I can do my circuit training infront of the TV...talk about multitasking!

She does provide an excellently balanced meal plan with some delicious, easy-to-prepare recipes. However, I have a problems with controlling my cravings and a bit of a food addiction/binge eating so diet is the hardest part for me. Kim has exceptional self-control in that area...she only eats a snack-size M&Ms when she is PMSing or having serious cravings. I don't have that willpower so I am using another book, The No Crave Diet, for that. I HIGHLY recommend The No Crave Diet book for anyone who has trouble with self-control and cravings for the diet part of Kim's book. I think the combination of these two books is the ticket for ending my life-long quest for a healthy weight and looking and feeling great.

Anyway, the bottom line is Kim's book is the best there is for quick and beautiful results right at home...besides having your own personal trainer!
