In her introduction to this Asian folktale, Hill states that the story "expresses something I have always believed--that children, whoever they are and wherever they live, find joy in living because they always hope for the best and then work to make the best happen." This upbeat message is charmingly borne out here, as young Kim Tong one-ups a greeedy moneylender and gets his parents' debt canceled in the process. Seeking Kim Tong's parents, the moneylender is enraged by the lad's cryptic responses; he promises to wipe out their obligation if the boy will explain. The moneylender suggests that a fly be witness to their bargain, but comes to regret his ploy. Hill, who notes that Vietnamese stories are not easily obtained, is to be commended for this worthy addition to multicultural literature--as well as for her fluent, stylish retelling. Filled with impressionistic swirls of vibrant color, Malick's paintings aptly convey all the exotic magic of a far-off land. Ages 6-10.
