a real rare find,
By jennyst@mweb.co.za (johannesburg, south africa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kimberley Jim: Music From The Movie (Audio CD)
i have been searching this title on cd for many years. as this is a south african film, one would think that the soundtrack would be available here in south africa unfortunately it is not. on the south african version of the soundtrack on lp the title "om en om die braaivleis vuur" appears but not on this cd version. i was quite suprised to find the titlle "boom chick polka". it was one of two titles recorded in the afrikaans language, however it remains a good buy for all those jim reeves fans out there.

Jim Reeves in Africa,
By
This review is from: Kimberley Jim (DVD)
While Jim Reeves was a well-known singer in America, both country and pop, he was a HUGE star in South Africa. When he toured there with other country stars, he was asked to make this movie. While the movie itself is short on production values, it is entertaining. Jim acquitted himself well as an actor. The most interesting part is in the extras. Jim had released an entire album in the Afrikaans language. For Jim Reeves fans, this alone is worth the price of the DVD.

OK for a first effort,
This review is from: Kimberley Jim (DVD)
I actually saw this movie at a drive-in theater in Cape Girardeau, MO in 1966. The film is not the greatest film ever made, but it is certainly not the worst. And, as with the vast majority of musicals, most of the songs aren't that good, but a few of them are. I like the catchy title tune, "Kimberly Jim,' "Diamonds in the Sand," and "Roving Gambler," an American Country song made relevant to South Africa by changes in a few of the lyrics. Reeves is still hugely popular today, as is evidenced by the number of hits his music gets on YouTube. So, I would recommend this movie because you actually are able to see the man who had one the most wonderful voices ever created by God use it.
