According Nietzsche: "The time for marriage comes before the time of loving each one another". And this is precisely the moral lesson of this simple but penetrating portrait around two young lovers who decide to marry after she is pregnant. He will be convince by himself he is not yet prepared to assume all the responsibility for this role. The fine direction of John Schlesinger deserved for this film the coveted and for many people unexpected Prize of The Silver Bear in 1962.

Liked it until I saw the TV mini-series,

This is a good movie but the TV mini-series is far superior. This version ends at less than half the story of the book. I didn't care for the lead female actress in this. She was a ditzy blonde and I felt this takes away from the story. Johanne Whaley is much better in the mini-series.
