5.0 out of 5 stars Where's the Special Edition?
Great flick, good for all ages, and above all else, it's SCHWARZENEGGER!!! I would really like to see a widescreen special edition of this film, but Universal is severely lacking in that department. The picture quality isn't that great and it's only available in fullscreen pan and scan. But it's a great film either way.

I think this is one of the worst DVD attempt by Universal Studio. They have totally ignore the fans of this movie. The picture transfer of this movie to DVD was not up to the standard. I felt like cheated by the studio. I should have read the fine print.."FULLSCREEN" I suggest not to buy this dvd and wait for better quality dvd version of this movie. I think Arnold should say something to the studio.."What Ah you thinking?!!"

4.0 out of 5 stars A charming, family-friendly film..., April 19, 2005
This review is from: Kindergarten Cop (DVD)
Long before Californians elected him as the Governator, former elite bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger took Hollywood by storm as The Terminator. An overpowering figure with amazing charisma on and off the screen, Schwarzenegger did his best to secure roles outside of the typecast blood and destruction movies for which he seemed destined. Instead, Arnold showcased his diversity by branching out into differing genres with such flicks as Twins, Junior, and Kindergarten Cop... Arnold's success is apparent in this light-hearted romantic comedy which utilizes his likeability as well as his macho man image. A delightful bit of entertainment, Kindergarten Cop is classic Arnold, spawning another of his usual famous one-liners, "It's not a tumor"!

When Detective John Kimble (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and his partner, Phoebe O'Hara (Pamela Reed), get a hot tip that a drug dealer, Cullen Crisp (Richard Tyson), who they've long pursued is searching for his ex-wife because of some money she embezzled from his operation, the two detectives go undercover to find the woman before he does. With Crisp's wife, Rachel, being the only one alive capable of testifying against Crisp and putting him jail, Kimble is intent on hunting her down. But all he and O'Hara know is the name of the Oregon school the woman's son attends. A former teacher herself, O'Hara agrees to go undercover as a kindergarten teacher in order to weed out the identity of the boy and his mother.

The plan goes awry however, when O'Hara becomes horribly ill, forcing Kimble to become the undercover kindergarten cop. The principal is reluctant, but agrees to give Kimble a try. A horrible disciplinarian with no idea of how to control a group of five-year-olds, Kimble's kindergarten class runs rings around him. A nearby first grade teacher, Joyce Palmieri (Penelope Ann Miller), provides him with advice and pointers - leading to a budding romance between the two. With her son Dominic in the class, Kimble suspects that she may be Crisp's ex-wife, but discounts the possibility once she tells him that her ex-husband is dead.

Rallying the class behind his new teaching methods, Kimble becomes one of the top teachers in the school. But his failure to hunt down Crisp's ex-wife provides the drug-dealer with the necessary time to hunt down his wife. Upon Crisp's arrival in town, Kimble and O'Hara learn that his true intention is not the money his ex-wife supposedly stole, but the snatching of his son. Together, they must take on Crisp and his belligerent mother before they kidnap the young boy...

A funny and heart-warming comedy, Kindergarten Cop's success rests solely on the shoulders of Arnold Schwarzenegger and his unique onscreen personality. With memorable one-liners and cute kids, the film is fun for the entire family. Although it has a modicum of action, Kindergarten Cop is not to be confused with an action thriller. So if you're looking for that type of film, it's not this one. But overall, Kindergarten Cop is an entertaining way to spend an evening, and for that reason, it's a definite must-see film...

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Schwarzeneggers very best movies, January 25, 2007
This review is from: Kindergarten Cop (DVD)
This is our families favorite movie! It has one of the best soundtracks/ score of all times! This movie shows Detective John Kimble go through a wonderful growth experience. He gets to know a side of himself, that he did not know about. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a unique character in his acting career so far: An elementary school teacher. Of course he is also an undercover detective on the way to discovering the love of his life.

Penelope Ann Miller plays a very enchanting role and brings a welcome balance to the movie and plot. We like, that this film is less violent than many other Schwarzenegger movies, so it is ok to watch with younger kids.

This movie is a must own on DVD!

1.0 out of 5 stars Great Film, Poor DVD., May 12, 2002

I really like this film. I also think it is rated near the top of the list of the DVDs most in need of re-production. The compression artifacts are really noticeable and distracting, the film is delivered in Full Frame and NOT Widescreen (Booo) and there is no real extras to speak of beyond your basic boring you-have-to-read-em production notes. Who buys a DVD to read production notes?! Its a multimedia format designed for the wonderful richness of animation, sound, video and interactivity yet we are still being forced to READ our DVDs. If I want to read I will get a book. Please send a message to the studios that we demand quality DVDs and don't buy this.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Governator shows his soft side, November 22, 2004
This review is from: Kindergarten Cop (DVD)
This movie gets spoofed in JibJab's short film "Ah-nold for Governor" in which the Governator cites the movie as evidence of his gubernatorial political qualifications. Hey, it's a lot more convincing than John Kerry's. Especially since this movie is so irresistible.

You just have to see the scene in which John Kimble reads the kids a poem about clouds. (Incidentally, it's Spring Morning" from A.A. Milne's book, "When We Were Very Young.") Schwarzenegger displays a Richard Belzer kind of tenderness. Then he will turn around and beat the living daylights out of the abusive father in the film ("He fell down. You all say the same thing.")

Kimble's relationship with Grace is moving and convincing and his camaraderie with his female partner Phoebe is evocative of Detectives Benson and Stabler in "Law & Order: SVU". I love the scene in which he makes up an entire background (something cops are used to doing) and Phoebe pretends to have an Austrian accent (she's almost more convincing than Ah-nold.)

The childrens' loyalty and response to Kimble is a joy to see. Schwarzenegger's work with children and his natural charisma make this fish-out-of-water story work. Anyone who's ever taught children will empathize with Kimble's disastrous first day.

There are great villains in this piece too, including a mother-in-law from hell.

My favorite lines...

Phoebe: You're not so tough without your car, are you?

Detective John Kimble: There *is* no bathroom.

Joseph: Boys have a penis, girls have a vagina!
Detective John Kimble: Thanks for the tip.

Tina & Rina: Our mom says our dad is a real sex machine.

Joseph: My dad's a gynecologist. He looks at vaginas all day long.

Detective John Kimble: I Have a headache.
Lowell: It might be a tumor.
Detective John Kimble: It's not a tumor!

Miss Schlowski: What did it feel like to hit that S.O.B.?
Detective John Kimble: It felt great.
(I love how the principal then starts practicing her right hook once Kimble leaves her office. You don't want to mess with this woman anyway, right hook or no.)

Detective John Kimble: Just don't throw up on me.
Phoebe: Nah, it's OK, I'm not gonna throw up on you. But I am gonna kiss you!

Detective John Kimble: I really appreciate your honesty. You happen to know someone that is not better than me?
Dominic: I don't know that many people.

Detective John Kimble: They're 6-year-old kids. How much trouble can they be?
Phoebe: On second thought, take the gun.

Crisp's mother is buying a heap of pediatric medication
Cullen Crisp: The boy's not sick.
Eleanor Crisp: Doesn't hurt to take precautions.
Cullen Crisp: Mother, you are going to make him sick. You stuffed all this crap down my throat for years, and there was nothing wrong with me!
Eleanor Crisp: That's why there was nothing wrong with you.
Cullen Crisp: Now, how can you argue with that?

Great comedy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Where is the widescreen version?, June 13, 2009
This review is from: Kindergarten Cop (DVD)
Hey movie companies, read the customer's reviews. Give the customers what they want = better sales and that = more $, And happy customers who shop for your products. I have just passed on two movies that I was pretty set on buying, up until I saw it was full screen only. I then read the reviews and found out not only were they full screen, the video quality was also poor. From now on I will look closer at which company I buy movies from. Have you lowered standards and going for quantity not quality? Thanks
