D Sullivan says:
looking for chapter books or stories that are appropriate for a 5 year old in content, challenging with vocab but also something that a Kinder child would find entertaining and could relate to yet not over her head developmentally. She will even read the NY Times without any trouble but of course it makes no sense to her.

I have the same issue. Appropriate content for this age seems to be difficult to find. My friend who is a reading teacher suggested the Frog and Toad series as well as the Magic Treehouse series. HTH :)

Stick with picture books. Many picture books are written on a third, fourth, fifth grade level or even higher! AND they have great pictures!
