Had this for one year, and then up-graded. Passed this along to my 15 year old daughter. The unit had sat on my bookshelf for about 6 months before she began using. She may have used for a month, before it locked up in the middle of a book she was reading. Tried their reset techniques, to no avail. This was a well cared for unit, keep in a Kindle binder. Not used on a beach, or in the sun. I called Amazon to find out about repairs. Note they were prompt in assistance, however I was told it was a hardware issue. They offered to sell me a reconditioned unit at reduced price. Sounds like a manufactured defect, that is not being recognized. Disappointed in the product! I guess if I felt it had gotten the proper use out of the unit, I would not have been so up-set. Since it did not get used very much, I feel I was taken advantage of. Who makes a product you can't repair? I have read many of the same issues out there, be wary of this unit. Now I love the Fire I have.

I give this Kindle 3 out of 5 starts because it's the 3rd kindle I've had. The first 2 broke and were replaced by amazon. The problems with my old kindle's were that the screen started getting black streaks across the screen that made it impossible to read, and the other one stopped working all together. My old kindle's were the wifi only versions and I was happy with their battery life. This kindle has 3G and wifi which is actually kind of convenient for downloading books, but it does have a noticeable shorter battery life. My wifi only version would last for 3-4 weeks without any issues. This one last about 2 weeks with the wifi/3g turned off, and at the end of the day I want to spend my time reading, not downloading books or worrying about my battery life. This kindle was also noticeably heavier than the wifi version. From my experience I'm not sold on the durability of these devices, and Amazon charged me the full price for my last replacement kindle even though they told me it would be free.

Will not use Boiron - Arnica Montana 30c, 30c, 80 pellets until 6/15/2013 - will rate this item after a couple of weeks use.

Within 1 to 3 years, the screens all go defective. This is my 4th Kindle; I invested as an early adopter for almost $400; every Kindle I have had, the screen is gone w/i 2 to 3 years. This Kindle has been very gently treated, and therefore I feel they are just not made to last. I'm reluctant to invest in another and will probably stick with other devices.

Bought the Kindle as a gift for my niece and it stopped working soon after the warranty period. We are so disappointed, as she is an avid reader and relied on this for her personal entertainment. Of course, given the return policy of Amazon, there is not much option but to discard the Kindle, as the efforts at troubleshooting have proven futile. This is so disappointing, and I will have to reconsider my Amazon purchases in the future, which are about 60% of my overall online purchases annually. The fact that there are no stores to return an item to once the return or warranty period has expired is alarming, especially given that on average, Amazon's prices are higher than other stores.

Unfortunatelly sudenly the display does not work after 18 months. I was comfortable and content with the reader but I cannot afford to buy a new kindle each year.

I sold my kindle as it just wasn't for me... I really liked the feel of a paper book and this just wasn't the same

It would seem to me that every model of the kindle is unreliable. I'm no hater - if fact - I love the Kindle. I have purchased a different kindle for each of my family members and we now have 4 in the house. However, the one year warranty is inadequate, and in my experience the product is a lemon. My Kindle Keyboard 3G was replaced 3 times within the 1 year warranty and is now out of warranty and has recently broken again. Amazon has offered to sell me a "highly discounted one" for about $140, only an idiot would buy another lemon at that price. Other than that offer, I'm in the dark. My Kindle (touch) on the other hand, has only broken once, also freshly out of warranty. Similarly, Amazon will not assist me with this. Amazon's famous customer service does not gleam as brightly in the Kindle department.

Bottom Line: Awesome product, totally unreliable. Wait until the product works, look elsewhere until then.
