The Gift

Now that Alfreda has begun to learn the Wise Arts, she is needed at home in the village of Sun Return. The woods around the cabin are alive with Poltergeists. Candles light by themselves, and even the rocks dance. There is much work for an apprentice Practitioner.

But a more dangerous task calls. For a new family has moved to the frontier; a family with strange ambitions and even stranger powers.  And chief among them is an enigmatic man known on the Other Side as The Keeper of Souls....

About the Author

In the beginning Katharine Eliska Kimbriel was nominated for the John W. Campbell Award for Best New SF/Fantasy Writer.  Katharine's work has long straddled the line: "too literary to be commercial, too commercial to be literary" - she has a list of itinerant occupations to prove it.

Published novels include the historical dark fantasies NIGHT CALLS and KINDRED RITES.  On the science fiction side you will find FIRE SANCTUARY, FIRES OF NUALA, and HIDDEN FIRES, stand-alone tales which take place on the same planet.

Katharine is managed by a Burmese cat and a handful of gargoyles. Her occasional hobbies have included ballroom dancing, brewing beer, antique roses and macrobiotic cooking.

Go to her web site for the most recent info; she posts at her Live Journal blog (Alfreda89) which runs downhill to Facebook, My Space and other points east.  She is a member of Book View Cafe, and books and info may also be found there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Allie's back, Hooray! -- Sometimes Death is a better choice., March 13, 1998

I love these books! Although Kindred Rites and Night Calls can be read as stand-alones, they are even more powerful when you read all of the story. Allie is tough, strong, smart, brave, and caring--- a great heroine. She is in even more danger in this book, for not just her life is in peril, her soul is too. A position as Death's apprentice is a much better choice than what awaits her otherwise. Skillful handling of myth, mountain lore and woodcraft, herbology, etc. Kimbriel has done her homework, and blends them all in with a strong plot, believable characters, and a clear clean writing style that delights. Enough terror to give you a jolt, enough strong writing to satisfy even the pickiest reader. READ THIS BOOK

5.0 out of 5 stars Would you please get moving!!!!!, October 22, 2005
This review is from: Kindred Rites (Mass Market Paperback)
Starting with Fire Sanctuary, through Fires of Nuala and Hidden Fires, all of which I love and still have, onto this series, which leaves poor Ally with quite a way to go, I have followed KEK. She moves ve---rrrr------rrrrr----y slowly. Her stuff is so good, but it is hard to get new stuff when none is being written. I noticed that she has a new chapbook out, but that will just whet our appetites for more. Is it publishing problems? I am getting tired of publishers not advertizing their authors, then dropping them for low sales, especially when it is my favorite authors. Obviously, KEK is one of them and I hope she comes out with sequels to this series and even Nuala. We are hungry for more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the hunt, November 29, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Kindred Rites (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a great follow-up to the first novel (Night Calls). The pace set in the first book doesn't slacken, the characters feel right, the story is gripping, and the writing is so smooth as to be nearly invisible, like you're floating along in the story rather than translating words on a page into mental images. I picked it up one evening before dinnertime, and neglected to eat dinner and stayed up past my bedtime in order to finish it. I can't wait for the next book.
