The King Arthurs Tools Lancelot 5/8-Inch 14-Tooth Arbor turns your grinder into a carving tool with the versatility to cut in any direction while making smooth cuts. It's especially useful for cutting openings in floors and walls, or for notching and grooving projects. You can also use it for freehand shaping of sculpture or carving projects, as well as large wood removal projects. Sharpen the 14 teeth with the included 5/32-inch round file. This arbor fits most 4 and 4 1/2-inch angle grinders.

Product Description

Lancelot Woodcarving Discs take the muscle work out of woodcarving with their speed, power and maneuverability. The secret is in the special chain saw blade which is securely held between two stainless steel plates. Mount the 4" dia. Lancelot in your 4" or 4-1/2" angle grinder and watch the chips fly! It easily cuts the hardest woods regardless of grain or knots. The 14-tooth model is great for "roughing out" the 22-tooth model and leaves a smoother "finished" surface. Teeth can be re-sharpened using a standard chain saw file. Maximum 14,000 RPM. Chains cannot be interchanged between models. Squire Mini Woodcarving Discs can be attached to another disc for the ultimate in power carving! It can be used alone as a small carving disc by attaching the 3-3/8" dia. Squire to a Lancelot Disc with the Universal Mounting Nut. You can effectively double your cutting capacity. You not only remove waste material faster but curved work, like the inside of bowls, is easier and smoother than when using a single disc. Fits all mini grinders with 5/8" x 11 TPI arbors.

It's amazing how is cut and remove wood.

This tool deserves at least as much respect as a chain saw, maybe more as it runs much faster and people can get casual with right angle grinders.

The quality of the carving that can be done with this tool is directly related to the quality of right angle grinder you purchase, and your proficiency with that grinder. I am building a log home and this tool is indispensible for log pockets, saddle notches, and tennons. I've had good luck with wildlife carvings in softwoods such as pine, hemlock, and cedar.

I bought this to shape the outside of a large clear maple log into a Haitian rada drum. The 14 tooth Lancelot eats through it as though there were an army of tiny little people chiseling away in front of my grinder. The log is still fresh so I haven't experienced it on dry hard wood yet. One thing to consider is using this with a variable speed grinder on a fairly slow speed (at least for fresh wood). At higher speeds it was less controllable and didn't remove as much material. I used a variable speed grinder midway between a 2 and 3 speed setting (out of 6). Also, the instructions say that you must use their universal nut to mount the Lancelot to a grinder, but it does not come with one. I used the nut that's on my grinder and it worked fine.

I also bought the 22 tooth version, but haven't tried it yet. Will review it eventually.

While I was on a shopping spree (thanks to a birthday present of many gift cards from my mom), I also bought the Sabbur-tooth donut wheel (not available from Amazon, but I bought mine from GregDorrance dot com, which was the cheapest and has great and fast service). I bought the extra coarse (orange) version also to help with the log. It is much more controllable than the Lancelot, but it doesn't take out as much material at a time. It does leave a smoother finish though and since it is more controllable, specially at slow speed, I was able to use it inside the log without worrying about kickback (I would not stick my hands into the log with the Lancelot!).

I gave the Lancelot 4 stars because I think it is silly for King Arthur Tools not to include the universal nut, but tell you that you have to use one with the saw. I mean it's just a nut, how much more would it cost them?

This tool does exactly what it is advertised to do. It removes wood - a lot of wood - fast. I have been using it to rough out wood bowls from cherry burls. It works fine to carve away the outer bark, but it's a bit too aggressive for working on the inside of the bowl. It seems better fit for the world of 'chainsaw sculpture', bears and eagles and such, where precision is less of a concern.

STRONG warning - be VERY, VERY careful with this tool. It is every bit as dangerous as a chainsaw. Wear leather gloves and eye protection, or even a full face shield, at ALL times when using this tool. Do NOT remove the guard from your grinder. Double check the arbor nut before every use. I found out that most experienced carvers (which I am not) stay away from this type of tool for intricate work due to the dangers involved.

I have used this tool to cut down wood blocks for carving. It quickly removes material and brings the wood closer to the final carving stage. Use caution as wood is removed QUICKLY.

This tool is a must have for anyone building a log home. Our builder had one and he used it in putting our house up. Now that we are finishing it, we have found it invaluable to:
-carve out grooves for the window/door bucks
-carve out grooves for wiring
-carve out large areas of the logs for light switches. I really don't know how we would do this without the king arthur. It would easily take 3x as long with a chisel.
This tool has allowed us to tackle many of the unusual challenges that come up with a log home. With each project, the king arthur has shown itself to be invaluable. Don't know how we would build this house without one.
Our electrician had to get one once he saw ours!

I needed to shape some timbers for a boating project and found that this was just the tool to do the job with out a lot of fooling around. Handles very nicely and removes wood at a good clip. As it behaves differently at different angles of attack it is worth the time to practice on well secured scraps till you find your technique.
The instructions are well worth reading, especially if you like to keep all your bits and pieces where they belong. This tool deserves at least as much respect as a chain saw, maybe more as it runs much faster and people can get casual with right angle grinders. I have seen more than one person set a grinder down while still spinning, this one won't be forgiving! Pay particular attention to the guard on your grinder and how it is set according to the instructions.
Chips fly a good distance, make sure you are wearing good protective gear including face mask, ear plugs and goggles, not just safety glasses. And be sure those around you are protected with goggles, etc.
Very pleased with the results using my 4 1/2" Milwaukee grinder, would suggest getting a spare chain if you are doing lots of production work or need to switch to a finer tooth pattern.
Worth the money!

My King Arthur 45814 Lancelot carving tools arrived on schedule and in good shape. Installation was a snap with the special nut, as simple as installing a standard grinding blade. Really removes wood in a hurry. Easily controlled and simple to use. I suppose because of the rpms and 4-inch blade it seems to dull quickly. I spend what seems to be a lot of time sharpening. I've already got my money back from small items I've sold. I wish I had spent the extra and purchased the other brand with carbide teeth. Maybe the King Arthur folks can come up with 4" round carbide tipped chain saw blades?
