A Group That Never Got Their Props In The USA..., July 8, 2010
This review is from: King Biscuit Flower Hour (Audio CD)
OK, so they weren't Crimson, Yes, Tull, Procol or ELP (thankfully), but they sure as hell deserved more recognition than they ever got here in the states. They were all multi-instrumentalists, sometimes passing around instruments in mid-song, all played percussion, all sang to some extent and wove melodies that were dense, complex, intriquing and baffling, this probably the reason they couldn't be popular. Sometimes the changes were abrupt, even confusing to the audiences who were lit up in some capacity, given the loose attitudes regarding drug use then. I was lucky enough to be at this show at New York's Academy of Music back in January, 1975, and it was a treat to revisit, even though this documents only about half the performance. The recording's a bit dry, even jagged in spots, it sounded better than it does here, but what is here is fine enough, although 'Playing The Fool' is a better live document. Highlights are 'Knots', 'Proclamation' and 'So Sincere', which features the entire group playing a drum/percussion piece that is the lynchpin of the performance. Grab this one and check out 'The Power And The Glory' that was Gentle Giant.
